Donating YT 4000 Club Member | Neutering: What age? I'm reading lots of conflicting opinions on what age to neuter my boy. There is no question I will be neutering him, I'm just not sure when is the best time to do it. Having always had large dogs, there was never an issue on getting them neutered before 6 months. Never had any problems with it either. But I'm not sure on these little guys. My vet says Rhett is ready and we could do it before he turns 6 months (he's 17 weeks now). His testes are down and he is a gordo in the weight department (5.9 lbs today!) The topic came up today because I asked about microchipping him and she prefers to do both at the same time to minimize pain to the little guys. So my question is: When did you neuter your males and why at that age? TIA. |

| I neutered at 6 months old on the recommendation of my *OLD* vet. I wish I had waited a little longer. I would never neuter before 6 months old and in the future would probably give my puppy a little more time to mature. I spayed by girl at 10 months old and would likely wait in the future with any male dog until about 8 to 10 months old as well.

| I was told 6 months and that's what I did. I think that's the norm for a puppy. I have read here on YT puppies being neutered much earlier which surprised me. I don't think I would recommend it tho. |

| I am choosing to neuter at 5 months of age due to behaviors starting to show. I've talked to my vet and altho he usually waits he agrees it may be time. He has actually tired to I guess they call in tieing but i call it humping b/c im breeding clueless. I have an older spayed JRT that he tries to tie with all the time. Im afraid if i don't have this surgery done he will of had a successful tie and have issue in the future. Secondary hes started to lift his leg to potty some of the times. Because I want to be able to do pitttle pads as well as outdoor potties lifting of the leg may complicate the aim indoors. Like I said this is secondary and if that was the only problem I would push back the time frame. while my vet did tell me in most cases if i wait longer his behavior will change, BUT, if he has a successful tie it may not. |

| Kaji was neutered a few days after his first birthday, but that was because I got him on his first birthday. If I had raised him from 12 weeks old, I would have waited until 8-10 months old, in hopes that all his baby teeth would fall out. That way, you put the puppy under only once and he is neutered, retained teeth pulled out, and microchipped. Don't forget to get blood work done before the neuter to make sure your baby is in tip top shape to handle the anesthesia.

Buzz is getting nuetured @ 18 months, unless the last canine tooth doesn't come out by 12 months, then he will be neutured then...I made my decision, based on all the pros and cons...There's no way he will have an opportunity to breed, so unwanted puppies are not an issue...However, WOW, what sweet dispositions they would have lol... | |

| Jackson was 7 months old when neutered. He was a bigger boy and by 7 months old was around 12lbs. He lifted his leg once on my dad's outdoor porch furniture and I went uh-oh! and scheduled the neuter for the following week. He was pretty much fully matured (he stayed at 12lbs up until around 3 months ago... where the last vet scale claimed he's 16lbs, but it's mostly muscle because he didn't outgrow anything). It worked fine for us IMO, between 6 months-10 months is a great time but it all depends on the dog. He also had 4 baby teeth pulled that were not coming out (his canines) and was microchipped. If a dog was already marking or humping a lot, etc, I would neuter asap to prevent habits.

| Duke was neutered at about 10 months old. He was also microchip the same time with the procedure. Duke was about 5lbs when I got him neutered, didn't want to do it earlier because of his size. He recovered well. Our vet also said that 6months is good enough but I wanted to wait until I was ready also.

| Joey and Tank were just fixed about 3 and a half weeks ago. Joey will be 2 on Friday and Tank is 18 months old. I waited so long because I had considered studding them out, and decided against it. They never fathered a litter, luckily, and it was just the right thing to do. I was hoping it would help Joey's anxiety, but so far no such luck. The boys do mark, but typically only outside. I say typically because we just bought a house like a month ago, and they have marked inside there, probably because it's all new smells. Good luck to you with your decision!!!
