| Rare Mosquitoes Threaten Dogs in LA County I know most of you in California don't use heartworm prevention since the threat is normally so low. Something to discuss with your vets. Rare Mosquitoes Threaten Dogs in L.A. County KTLA News 7:11 AM PDT, May 12, 2010 WEST COVINA -- A sudden jump in the population of rare mosquitoes in the San Gabriel Valley could endanger dogs, according to health officials. So far this season, 300 western tree hole mosquitoes have been trapped from Altadena to Claremont, compared to 60 in the previous 17 years, according to the San Gabriel Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District. The rare mosquito is a frequent carrier of heartworm, which, without treatment, can be fatal to dogs, L.A. County health department Dr. Emily Beeler said. Monthly treatments can avoid heartworms. | Good post. I'd definitely be using it if I lived there.

| Thanks for the heads up. Kaji's on heartworm meds anyway. His dose was this Monday, but it's still nice to know these things.

| My vet suggested Heartguard, and that's what I've been using for the past 9 months. We only have 3 more doses left, so that means I'll be reading up on the other meds out there before deciding to stick with this or switch to something else. My vet threw in a years supply with Kaji's neuter package since I asked for a lot of extras. She was really trying to be nice.

| This is a personal choice, but I'm very weary of meds that are suppose to be for everything. I fear I could be over medicating Kaji, and while I'm using Heartguard now, I was hoping that would be the only drugs I'd be using. I'm looking for a more natural way of preventing fleas and ticks. I still haven't found it. So, I'm thinking that I'll go back to using Advantix (on vet recommendation) and only using half doses, and maybe continue on the heartguard. At least this way I can stager when I give him what. I hate the whole heartworm, flea, tick meds. It's like your damned if you don't, but if you don't do your hw, your damned if you do. Sorry Ladymom for getting a bit off topic.

My friend lives in new jersey and she has 6 dogs and does not use heartworm - is that state a bad area for hw? have you tried Touch of Mink - The Most Incredible Skin Care Products Available at any Price minksheen as out here we do not have as big a problem with fleas so that might help as it is natural and some swear by it. If you were in a more infested area then it might be different but here in cali not too bad unless you live by the beach then that might be different | |

Donating YT 500 Club Member | Deb, with yours I would be careful with Revolution. I used to think it was all okay and it probably is on most. But, last time I used it on Ruby (my smallest) she did have a reaction. Immediately she became lethargic, I washed off the revolution quickly and she was fine then. Since then if I use flea meds, it's frontline and I use Heartguard for heartworm.
