| Does your Yorkie need to be on a diet I called the Vet a bit ago and was questioning them about his weight gain since he's been neutered. He was around 7.5-7.8 lbs. I weighed him today and he's almost 8.5 lbs. It most likely is the treats he's getting at agility or the treats I give him. I need to cut back on that and give him Cherrios instead. One potato chip is 150 calories. I don't give him potato chips, but she was giving me an example. Plus, the food I give him I need to cut back and give him less. He gets a lot of activity: walks once a day and/or plays ball, and agility once a week (he did great tonight). So, what issues of this have you dealt with your dog(s) on~? |

| Nope, he's at a very healthy weight. No diet needed here. And... potato chips are not 150 calories per chip?

| Nope, no diet needed here. But the easiest way to take weight off is to decrease food intake and increase exercise. If your dog seems hungry try adding healthy things to their food like green beans, they have no calories but help your dog feel like they are eating more

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I have 2 that have recently gained a lot of weight, 1 that is borderline and one that is too skinny. I switched them to California Natural kibble about 5-6 week ago from the canned. I don't know if that had anything to do with it or if I am overfeeding. Also, while I was gone for 5 days my dtr was home with them and she kept giving them treats. One of the overweight ones and the borderline one go to the vets tomorrow and I know she is going to mention their weight gain. I have cut down their food and went and bought some lower fat treats but they seem really hungry now. I know I just have to be stricter with their food.

| My boys are at their ideal weights Joey is 5 lbs 5 oz and Tank is 4 lbs even. I actually had to ask the vet if they were too skinny - and she said they were great. They were just neutered about 3 weeks ago though, so I'm kinda wondering if they will gain weight.

| Maybe she made a mistake about the potatoe chips, but it sounded like she said one chip. Maybe the calorie count is different for a dog than a human~? I don't know. She told me that they can do a calorie count on him, but he's too young. It most likely is the human food that is causing his weight gain, since they believe in giving human food like turkey hot dogs for instance, when we train in the agility course. She told me to switch his treats to Cherrios which is less fat and calories. Giving him too much to eat can cause so many issues in their health. Even if I gave a "milkbone" to him, that is like a meal and with his regular dog food can be too many calories too. |

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | Potato chips have about 150 calories per one ounce serving (about 20 chips). Calories are the same for humans and animals because it's a standard unit of measurement for energy output (remember the old "amount of energy to raise 1 gram of water 1 degree celsius" from chemistry class?) Cheerios have 110 cals/serving (1 ounce or approximately 1 dry cup). Green beans have 47 cals per 1 cup serving (frozen). Sigh... my dog eats better than I do! I'm not one to talk about weight, though. My bruiser has gained 2 lbs (a full 50% gain in his weight) since we got him 7 weeks ago. LOL. Last edited by Rhetts_mama; 05-12-2010 at 08:52 AM. |

| Nope Sofia definitely does not need to loose any weight. I wish she would put on a few ounces, but her doc says she is perfect for her, so I'm ok with that. |

| There is no way to tell if he needs to lose weight by just looking at his current weight. Has the vet examined him and given him a body condition score? Green beans make good treats. Turkey hot dogs, not so much. And no, Ellie doesn't need to lose weight. She needs to gain weight.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I just got back from the vets with all 3 of my girls. Cali went from 5.2 lbs to 5.3, Pixie from 4.4 in February to 4.7 and Roxie from 5.2 to 5.7. Needless to say Pixie and Roxie are on diets. My vet said to keep them on the kibble but give them less. She said the dry is much denser and their bodies take more of it in than the wet.

| Pixie weighs 5.5 lbs and Daisy is 22 lbs. Daisy needs to lose at least 3-4 lbs. I walk her 3 miles every day and I cut her food back. I am going to try adding green beans to fill her up.

| Veggienut, Regarding the calorie count on potato chips, you probably are thinking of the comparison between a dog eating a single potato chip vs a human. Our last vet had display cards in her office that demonstrated the concept. For instance, if a cat ate a potato chip every day, it would be the equivalent of a human consuming several cheeseburgers a day. So far, my boys are maintaining their proper weights. For training, I use kibble and a little lamb roll taken from their scheduled meals. |

| Another thought -- how old is your boy? My boys both had growth spurts at 10 months of age. They each gained a pound in their last growth cycles. (they grew in height too) Does your pup look or feel overweight? Don't judge only by the scale. Our vet told us to cut back food at 8 months, but my boys still needed the same amount. My boys are very active, so that could be part of it. Last edited by Maximo; 05-12-2010 at 03:33 PM. |

| Katie is on a diet. When I picked her up in early March she was 8.5 lbs. Now she is at about 7.5 lbs. and counting! First thing I did was take her off of Beneful *yuck!* and she is on Wellness now. 1/4 c of kibble in the am and 1/4 c in the pm. Walks, playing, veggie treats here and there, and she even got some bday cake (2 instances!) and she still lost weight! I don't agree with the hot dogs for agility classes. is there anyway you can speak with instructor about that? Hot dogs are a huge no-no, whether turkey or not, not only the fat, but the salt content is WAAAAY too high for them. What kind of food do you have him on now? Also don't give him Milkbones. That stuff is absolute garbage.
