| According to the YTCA site, it just says that weight should not exceed 7 pounds Yorkshire Terrier Club of America And I double checked the AKC site and it looks like it says all the same things American Kennel Club - Yorkshire Terrier I have frequently heard that standard is 4-7 lbs as well but don't know where people get this.... Now if you were to show a 2 or 3 lb dog, it probably would not do well because the real purpose in showing is to evaluate breeding stock and dogs that small are not good breeding prospect. |

| In reference to weight the Yorkshire Terrier Club of American standard just says: Quote:
So actually any yorkie under 7 lbs is within the standard. There is no minimum weight requirement but many people have the mindset of referring to yorkies that are 5 to 7 lbs as standard size yorkies and yorkies under 5 lbs as 'teacups' but as most of us know this is incorrect. | |

The YTCA owns the standard, the AKC is the keeper. What is displayed on the YTCA.org pages is the Illustrated Standard, which explains the standard a bit more in detail.

Yorkshire Terrier Club of America (Awards) All breeders may occasionally have an unusually small Yorkie (hopefully healthy), though no responsible breeder breeds for this trait. Many breeders prefer a general weight range of 4-7 pounds believing that size retains desired Toy qualities while maintaining optimum health. The Yorkie Standard states weight "must not exceed seven pounds" and as a prospective pet owner you should realize that even at 7 pounds, the Yorkie is still a small dog. (Females weighing less than 5 pounds are considered by most breeders to be unsuitable for breeding.

| Correct is to not exceed 7 pounds, based on the YT standard via YTCA/AKC. The above posters have given you right information. The problem with the Internet is that there are so many people breeding yorkies and have sites with wrong information on there that some people belive to be truth. Just because something is in print does not make it true. Reason one must do their research. There is no such thing, with yorkies, as standard size, teacup size, etc... With yorkies... it is that per standard they should not exceed 7 pounds. Sounds like you will just have some small yorkies, that is all. You could, if brought up again by that person, to share with her the YTCA.org web site for correct informaiton. Last edited by topknot; 05-09-2010 at 08:36 AM. |

While there is a bit of word difference between what is posted on the YTCA vs the AKC. They are one in the same. The YTCA is using verbage from the Illustrated Standard (without the illustrations).....it just explains it a bit more in detail. In the US there is only one standard and AKC is the keeper and the YTCA is the owner. As a YTCA member, there is daily discussion on the standard.

| I guess all this is true about size and everything, but I really, really like the small ones and I guess that is a personal preference. But then, I keep mine as pets and don't show them.

| It's human nature to gravitate toward the smaller size. Look at that 6'2" male that always falls for that 5' girl. It's something about protection and aren't they cute.

| I think, just like you said, everyone just has a preference. I prefer the bigger ones, above 8lbs. For my lifestyle, that size just works, I don't think I could handle any smaller. Sometimes I wish the Yorkie had classifications like the Poodle... maybe like a 3-7lb range and then an 8-13lb range or something. I just love the bigger Yorkies. I love having the Yorkie personality in a big package!

| I like the little ones Mine's 3.5lbs at 8 months. My breeder told me when he's an adult, he should be around 4.8lbs. |
