| being around other "outside" animals with fleas? We are going to visit my in-laws and they have a neuterted jack Russell & and a cat. They live in the country and the animals are kept outside. They also have goats. We have not gone for a visit since I brought Allie home in October. They keep asking when are we coming and my boys love it there. My main concern is fleas. Allie is treated monthly with flea/Heartworm meds, but I know the other animals are not and do have fleas. I'm hesitant to go because of Allie. I do not want her to get fleas. Other than holding her all day, and keeping her away from them...she will have to go potty?? Would fleas be in the grass waiting to jump on her, or only if she gets close to the dog & cat? Or will the meds keep them away? I'm sure it sounds silly to the inlaws but I bathe her regularly & take pride in taking really good care of her. Also she is pee pad trained at my house. Do they know to go on the pad when you take them to other peoples homes? I have baby gates that restrict her access to carpet areas and she always pees/poops where she is supposed to. I do not keep her in a crate or expen I have both, ( chose not to use them ) she sleeps at night on the sofa with her blanket. I have carpet in my room other wise she would be sleeping with me. Where we lived before she slept with me but would get down In the middle of the night and pee/poop on the carpet instead of her pad in the adjacent family room. We live in a rental home so she cannot do that. Sorry for the long post any tips/suggestions would be great! Thanks |

| Hi. If she is on flea preventative she should be fine. What I would do is not allow her in the grass... whether you let her go on the pads or walk her in the street... also limit her contact with the other animals (shouldnt be hard if they are outside anyway). My dogs are pad trained and will go on the pads if I bring them with me somewhere, they have used them at other peoples houses, in hotels, wherever... as soon as you put it down, show her where it is. As soon as you get home from your trip, wash all her bedding in hot water and wash her really good with regular dawn dish detergent... this way if she did pick up a few fleas you will kill them right away. Have fun nd good luck.

| I agree with ArmaniMan's advice. My boys are pad trained and will use the pad in hotel rooms. Make sure Allie knows where the pad is and that she has easy access to it all times. In addition to flea and tick preventatives, another consideration is vaccinations. My boys get the minimum required, so our vet advised me not to allow them to roam on foot in rural/wooded areas where there is farm or wild animal waste. Enjoy your trip! |

| Hmm... I wouldn't take her and I probably wouldn't go myself. Seriously, I'm not being a smart *ss but if I had relatives that had fleas I just wouldn't be visiting them at their house. We'd have to meet at a public place because I wouldn't even want them to come to my house. Fleas are in the grass and can be transported on your shoes. Once you get them in your carpeting - ugh! Nope I just wouldn't want to have to go through all that work to get rid of them when it is preventable. I know I sound b*tchy but I put my foot down when it comes to stuff like that - even with family. And for the peeing on the carpet at someone else's house - yes they might do it and not for lack of being potty trained. It's marking. I'm sorry - please don't take this as a personal attack - it's not. I'm just telling you what I'd do. Here's a couple of articles for you to read. | Thanks for the replies, I don't take it personally at all! When we go for visit I feel like the cook/maid and when they come to visit I feel like I'm running a bed & breakfast. I probably will leave her home with my mom she really likes her. The inlaws think I have turned into one of those crazy dog people, and you know what, I take that as a compliment and politely say thank you! Lol |

| I just have a memory of when I was 19 & my roommate had a cocker spaniel, he was infested with fleas and he & I were the only 2 people in the house that they would bite! I know I'm a sweet person but you should have seen my legs, I looked like I spent a month on a Survivor Island....NEVER again with fleas! |

| Wow, this post reminds me of our trip to FL. There are no fleas like Florida fleas! I think Price got his when we stopped for potty breaks, and what a nightmare!! The next time we go, I'll def be prepared. It's good that you have an option...to leave your puppy with your mom.

We sprayed our legs and ankles with Off Deep Woods (w/DEET) before we even went in her house, and left our bags in the car. When I got home I basically striped down just inside the door and washed everything in hot water. One female flea can result in an infestation in just a matter of weeks. Not worth it IMO. Those poor pets. They are probably full of tapeworms, too, since they have fleas. Why don't people use a flea preventative? For a cat and Jack Russell, you can get a bottle of Frontline spray for $25 and will last several years. | |
