Boosting Immune System I have a two year old male yorkie, Rolo, and he has been sick almost since day one. He has chronic ear and throat infections. The longest he has ever gone without antibiotics is 8 weeks and usually it is around 4 weeks. In december he had his tonsils out because they would swell so big he couldn't breathe. A year ago he was allergy tested, put on duck and potato dry food, and is currently receiving allergy shots on a monthly basis. I can't tell, but it doesn't seem to help. I am at a loss as to what to do to keep him well. I have been reading about boosting your dogs immune system and was wondering if any of you have heard of an immune boosting supplement called 4 life transfer factor? Any imput would be greatly appreciated.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Oh my goodness, poor Rolo ! What did the allergy testing say that he was allergic to, specifically? How old is he now? At what age did his issues start? Did his issues start after receiving a kennel cough (bordatella) vaccine, btw? When they culture his ear/throat, what bacteria/fungus grows out in culture? I have not heard of that supplement..but sure hope you get answers for your kiddo.

Rolo was 2 yrs on December 31st. We got him when he was six weeks old (February 17th) and he had his first round of sore throat/ears in June. He had all his shots on time; I don't know when you give kennel cough, but he got his whenever he was supposed to get the shot. He is allergic to corn, flaxseed oil, fish oil, pollen, dust, leaf mold, yeast mold, and kapok. Extremes in temperature, going to the groomers and stress also trigger episodes. My vet swears he can also pick up germs from sick people as well although I am not sure about that; I thought germs didn't transfer from people to dogs.

Confused on the "June" thing - do you mean "June" after you got him - or last June? Also, the kennel cough vaccine is not a core vaccine - and it may be important to know if he was given this -and- when, in relation to those first throat issues. Also, was he given other non-core vaccines? Also, at what age were his very first vaccines given? (sorry, maybe too many questions) I notice he is allergic to flax - but you're feeding Duck/Potato - is that Natural Balance? Bc NB has flax in it - so that may bother him. It always bugs the heck out of me that they put flax in "allergy" foods . If the allergy shots aren't working....has Atopica been discussed? That can really be a miracle for some dogs. Allergy shots can take a while though. Maybe groom him yourself? What happens during these "episodes", btw? Poor baby, allergies are miserable for dogs.

He was six months old when he got the first ear infection/tonsilitis infection and had to have antibiotics. I checked his records and he has never had kennel vaccine; I remember now, he is not usually well long enough for vet to feel comfortable giving it. He eats science diet duck and potato---no flaxseed oil. We have an approved list of food and treats from allergy facility and I read labels CAREFULLY. After lots of reading I feel sure that the breeder sold him too young and that has contributed in a big way to his problem, but at this point you can't undo that, only go forward. What is atopica? Thank you for your feedback.

Nope, I'm wrong. Rolo has never had a bordetella shot. He had parainfluenza. He never gets well long enough for the vet to give kennel cough drops.

Link on Atopica (also has customer reviews) Novartis - manuf. My Marcel has pollen issues and was waking up at 1 and 2am to chew/lick his paws. Atopica has stopped that. He still has a few breakthrough symptoms when pollens are super high, but his quality of life when WAY up after Atopica...pollens are so bad in AZ.
