YorkieTalk Newbie! | HELP!! NEW MOMMY 2nd X SHE BARELY EATS!! I am a 2nd X Mommy to a Yorkie now. My first Yorkie Baby ws 6 weeks when we brought her home. She grew to be a 6 Lb yorkie, she was somthing special. She passed away in Nov, 2008, at the age of 18 years. i have 2 daughters, now 28 & 23. She was their furry sister, and my daughter that never grew up,it was a loss i cannot discribe. My husband and i swore,we could not have another....until my 23 yr old daughter decided differently/lol. This past Christmas she put a dpst on a puppy for us to choose. There were 3 in the litter, we chose the spunky one...My Star. so we are blessed to have another perfect dog. The only problem we are having is Star is 6 months and tiny. Shes 2 Lbs 6 oz. She is the most picky eater. My past Yorkie would gobble her food. Star however has tried every top brand possible. Ive tried mixing moist, dry, etc..she barely eats. if i hand feed her she MIGHT eat a few morsels, but im stressed and not knowing what to due. Ive litterally purchased 8 foods. Ive read the top dog food charts, and tried to find the best, but she just dont eat! My other baby suffered with skin itching, and Constant ear infections, and i dont want poor nutrients to do the same to her. PLEASE ANY ADVICE??? Im at a loss! I also just noticed her 1 ear has a slight odor starting, also any advice on cleaning it so we can avoid ear infections???? I hope I can find a healthy food she will eat, to hopefully avoid health issues. The fact that she is so tiny also worries me, as puppy this tiny must eat. Im sorry this is long, im like a Momy with a newborn after 18 years/lol Thanks all for your help,Kris (Stars Mommy) |

| Maybe you can look into some vitamins to help get the stuff she needs. Have you tried home cooked meals? I have a friend with a dog that won't eat anything she wont try first....she has to prepare all meals in house. Is it just kibble she wont eat or is it wet food too? Stay calm and remember each dog is different. I had to feed my new guy warmed up food at first. Meaning I had to put warm water on his kibble. Maybe you could mix some yogurt into her food. I know thats the only way I can get my other dog to take her monthly heart worm pill is to smash it up and put it in a spoon full of yogurt. |

YorkieTalk Newbie! | Thankyou, yes i have tried mixing moist with dry. She gobbled it down for a few days, as she does everytime i give her a new food, then no more. Im concerned,as i know shes so tiny. My other baby ATE! AOT! lol...im like a crazy new Mommy now. Im also worried because i dont want to have her suffer with chronic ear and skin issues. She sems to be starting with her 1 ear. i dont even know what to use for her ear now. My other dog lived with alergies her whole life, poor baby, so she lived on ear meds. I want to stop any possible alergies if i can before they start. Any advice on ears? Thanks so much,Kris |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I really don't think Star is having problems because of her diet, allergies aren't exposed until after a year, and even the poorest foods, don't cause the problems you are describing. While I agree that a healthy diet is important, there are many different brands that are considered healthy, however there's a lot of disagreements, on what is "best." Finding a healthy diet and one she will eat, can also be challenging. My advice is to have a vet check to see what is causing constant ear infections. Are you careful when you are bathing so that no water gets in ear? Also, since she doesn't seem to be growing normally, I would have a bile acid test done. Dogs with liver shunt, often do not grow normally, and at her weight, she doesn't really need much food at all, but if she has Liver shunt, the sooner you treat it, the better the results, and it's really important to have the dog on a diet with high quality protein. Many dogs with liver shunt live long lives, but it's important to treat it early.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | If she is only 6 months, it's probably not allergies, it could be mites a skin fungus, you really need to have it checked. Dog this small can get extremely sick from just fleas. Please take her to the vet!

YorkieTalk Newbie! | Thankyou, no my Star has never had an ear infection, i just dont want them to start. The vets feel she is fine, her parents were tiny also, as are other pups. Im just wanting her to start her life right, when we got my other Yorkie, i had no clue about health, skin, issues, and poor quality food. I have since learned so much. I guess i worry because she is so tiny, and just so fussy. My other dog would eat anything. Star, however is fussy. Loves a new brand for a few days, then thats it. Thanks, Kris |

YorkieTalk Newbie! | No she does not have fleas. She is on a monthly heartworm and also flea treatment. She has no itching. She was groomed last week, so maybe she had water in her ear. Ill have to watch, and go get ear cleaner that ph bakance & dry. Thanks,Kris |

YorkieTalk Newbie! | Thankyou for your concern Nancy. Yes, I had planned on taking her to vet, maybe you misunderstood, im sorry. Star has never had an ear infection up till now, and even now, we think it may be from her grooming last wk. My daughter works with animals and agreed. I know she has no alergies now, i am just wanting to prevent any future if possible. My other Yorkie battled her whole life with them,as she was just seceptable.I took her to vet with every issue, and they were constant. I hope we can avoid allergies with Star if possible. I got my first dog when she was a baby, and when she passed she was 18 years, so i guess im doing somthing right/lol. Star is not in pain, i never would have known about her ear, except that out of habit from my other dog, I have always checked her ears constantly.I never would allow my baby to suffer in anyway, which is why i am like a crazed Mommy with a newborn/lol. Star has never had a appitite. Her Vets feel she is perfectly healthy weight & growth wise. Her parents were tiny, as are her siblings. I have read many articles about how the food quality can effect them later on, so am wanting her to be on a food that has a lower incedence of alergies, however my main concern is that she eats enough. Star never gets table scraps, and only gets an occasional treat & when training her. She is full of energy actually, so im sure it is as my daughter says, im just over protective. Thankyou for your advice, much appreciated,Kris PS always nice to have input from other Yorkie Moms |

| My yorkie is 7 months and weight 2lbs 8oz and yes she's a picky eater. You know what she did she ate her sis poo and it gave her a stinky smell to her. So check to see if there's any poo missing. I decided to try raw meat and that solve everything, she gets nice and full so she doesn't have the need to eat other delicacies. Everytime I take out the container of Primal she goes bonkers and she looks like she's been starving when she digs in her bowl. Here's the link to Primal: Primal Pet Foods: Store Locator Good Luck!!
