| How much do you feed?? Hi All, I have two Morkies. One is 5 lbs and one is closer to 7 lbs. I've been leaving kibble (Wellness) in their bowl for them to eat while I'm at work. When I come home at 3pm there is usually kibble left. I take it away and feed them dinner (1/4 cup each) at 6-6:30. They never finish it. I don't want to over feed them and I don't want them to be hungry either. My question is....how much should they be eating in a day. I've read different things...from 1/2 cup each meal to 2 Tbl each meal. I just want them to be healthy. I had a Cocker Spaniel before these two. He was a little heavier than he should have been even though he got lots of excercise and I followed the feeding instructions on the bag. My two Morkies also get plenty of excercise as well. Any advice would be GREAT! Thanks so much

| Jennifer, what little cuties your morkies are! I have a 5 lb maltese and an 8 lb yorkie that should be 6-7 lbs so I'm trying to figure out how much to feed per weight for maintaining for the maltese and for losing for the yorkie. It's not easy to figure out sometimes. Are your dogs overweight? if not then I'd say you're feeding them the right amount. I'm sure you'll get great advice from experts here. |

| I feed both of mine just under 1/2 cup per day... I use a 1/4 cup scooper and *almost* fill it for breakfast and dinner... they are just under 5 pounds, and just under 6 pounds. They are both very active... so they need a little more then some others their size... they are both in great shape... if they are really quiet for a few days and start to put on a little bit of weight, I adjust accordingly... I am always feeling them to make sure they feel just right.

| Sasha is a morkie & weighs about 8lbs. She eats 1/4 cup total for the day (1/8 cup twice a day) & also gets plenty of exercise throughout the day. |

| For a year we had all three on Nature's Variety & we fed them 1/8 cup twice a day and mixed in green beans & a touch of wet food. They get a treat twice a day. We are now testing Orijen & Fromm and we tried doing a 1/4 cup a day without green beans, but a touch of wet. Well I measured what they left in the bowl afterwards and it was 1/8 cup, so they seem to be eating the same amount as before!

YT 2000 Club Member | I free feed my 2 smaller dogs, when their bowls are empty I fill them. My two bigger dogs (beagle and sheltie) get 2 feedings a day, because both of them have put on weight in the last few months. My smaller dogs are suppose to get according to the bag of food 1/4 to 2/3 cups a day for dogs 3 to 10 pounds. I put a 1/2 cup in each of thier bowls when they are empty and it may take them up to 2/3 days to finish it. They do get about 2.5 ounces of canned in the a.m and p.m, so they generally use the dry food as a snack. How much is the bag saying to feed them?. Some dogs arent big eaters and only require a small amount of food. If they arent loosing wieght and are happy I wouldnt worry to much about it as long as they are eating.

| Hi, Thanks for all your replies. I think it sounds like the average is 1/4 cup per meal. Thanks again

| sorry... 1/2 cup each... they get separated during meal time so I know they each eat their own dish.

| Trixie is free fed and gets 1/4 cup kibble in morning and then 1/4 cup kibble when she finishes her morning kibble. Usually there is some leftover kibble, but this seems to be working for her.

| Maxine gets 1/8 cup of Iams Low Residue Kibble and about 1 Teaspoon of Iams Low Residue Wet 2 times a day. For comparison, the Corso gets 2 1/2 cups Dry and 1/2 can Wet 2 times a day. Maxine tries to climb into his elevated bowl to get his food. He lets her, and will let her take the food out of his mouth he is so gentle. She on the other hand guards her bowl like you would not believe. We can get near her, and take it, but if the Corso just gets near, she will attack. |

| "How much" you feed also depends on the food brand you are feeding and it's calories per cup, protein & fat content.
