Little 6 month old not eating well! Our little 6 month old used to be a good little eater. We have always fed her science diet small bite pup and she's had no problem. In fact when we fed her she would get all excited and devour the food. Lately though(I'd say the last couple weeks) she won't eat all her food. We didn't change the amount or time she just won't eat it. We noticed about the same time that she was loosing teeth like crazy so we figured the food was to hard. We would wet it down with some water to soften it and that helped for about a week and now it's the same results. Her breakfast will literally sit there all day without her barely touching it. She will eat but not like she used to. We have noticed that if we have her do obiedience and give her a couple pieces of her food as a reward she'll eat the reward then run to her bowl and grab a couple more bites from her bowl but then stop. Is this a stage or result of her age? She has been acting normal otherwise and weighes about 4.25 pounds. She additionally will eat her treats from potty training as well (only given when she goes #2).

If you are feeding her science diet small bites for puppies, then the primary ingredient is corn; #1 ingredient on the bag. In the top 5 ingredients there are 3 vegetables. There are so many more better choices to feed your pup than this. A dogs gastrointestinal track is designed differently than the track of an animal who eats vegetation. Dogs simply do not digest vegetables in the same way that we do. Check out kibbles which hold the primary ingredient status for a complete protein in the form of meat, fish, or game. That way, you know that your pup is receiving the amount of nutrition that it needs through quality foods, and not just fillers that are cheaper for the manufacturer to add in. The primary reason carbohydrates were first added into dog food was for stability of the structure of the kibble. Now, corn, wheat flour, rice flour, and soybean flours, have all become primary ingredients due to their cost savings and their carbohydrate content. They simply are not as nutritionally dense as complete proteins, and do not provide the amount of vitamins and minerals that complete proteins do. In my opinion, your pup would do much better on a high quality kibble with more than one complete protein in the top 5, especially since this is the time when all her organs, muscle structures, and bones are being built. You might want to check into Innova, Wellness, Acana or one that is similar in nutritional design as these are. Good luck!

| There are some sticky threads at the top of this forum that offer a lot of good information on the best foods for our babies! Yorkies are in general very picky eaters and you may have to change foods from time to time!

I never could get Apple to eat kibble, w/any success, unless I put something on it, like a tsp. of yogurt, or something! She was so little, and couldn't get her over 4 1/2 lb. I switched her to raw, at 10 months, and now she's never refused a meal, and weighs 5 lbs. ...She's a year and half old now...

Thanks for the responses folks especially the information regarding the carb content of science diet. I consider myself pretty knowledgeable regarding human food and it's macronutrient breakdown but never even thought to look at the ingredient or nutritional breakdown of the pup food. I'll let the wife know and have her read over the sticky thread. Thanks folks.
