| Layla became a Young Lady today Layla turned 8 months on the 15th. I was thinking about looking for a good vet for getting her fixed but she is just 3 pounds so I wanted to wait till she was (if ever) 4 pounds. I thought I was safe from her heat until around 10 months. I was wrong. Had to pick up some stuff at Home Depot and the Big R for my MIL, and when we got back in the truck I had blood on my arm where she had been. Sure enough, she is in heat. Not much swelling just a bit of blood. She is sleeping right now and I am covering my furniture with washable sheets and old blankets! LOL Guess I have about 5 months to set up the fixing before this happens again. |

| I'd go ahead and schedule her spay for as soon as your vet feels it is safe to do it, usually about a month after she finishes her cycle. Had she been spayed before she ever came into heat you would have eliminated her chance of ever getting mammary cancer. If you spay her before her second heat, the risk is still low, only 7%. If she has a second heat before she is spayed, her risk of cancer jumps to 25%. Since heat cycles aren't every six months like clockwork, I'd make sure it done as soon as possible so she still get the health benefits of early spaying. You don't want a second heat to catch you off guard.

| Thank you for the great info. I only waited because she is so small and was hoping the last two baby teeth come out! She is way to small to have pups. Even if she does break 4 pounds. She is just tiny. Her mom was 4.5-5 pounds but her father was 2.5-3 pounds. She was one of the bigger girls in a litter of 4 girls. I will start talking to my vet today. Thanks |

| Just wanted to offer some reassuring words about spaying......my Yorkie was just under 4 lbs. when she was spayed, and things couldn't have gone better. I allowed the vet to do all of the blood work prior to the surgery, just to be as safe as possible. Daisy was up and around the next day like nothing had even happened......it was a challenge to keep her from running and jumping per the doctor's orders. So, size doesn't necessarily need to be a problem, and spaying is so important! Best wishes............
