| Need vet for tooth extractions! Hey all, So two things: 1) Oscar's baby teeth are not falling out, and he literally has 2 rows of teeth, top and bottom. He was neutered almost a month ago, but the baby teeth weren't through yet, so they didn't pull any. Has anyone else had this...and does it get better...and how can I help them loosen and possibly fall out? 2) I took him to the vet to get him checked out. She said to give it to the end of the month (he's not quite 6 mos yet) and if they haven't changed, they will pull them. The problem is, she has quoted me $1700-$2000 for the extractions, xray and anesthesia. Is is just me, or does this sound rediculous??? I put a post in the "Pacific Northwest" section, but I thought I would check here. Does anyone recommend a vet somewhere North of Seattle? (I'm in Vancouver, BC right now, but could travel south of the border if it would be cheaper) I'm just afraid the vet here is taking me for a ride.... PLEASE pass along whatever advice you can offer!!! Cor |

| $1700 to extract baby teeth? That is probably the most ridiculous quote I have ever seen. Even $500 would be a huge over payment for this. Never heard of xrays to pull baby teeth, only adult; but maybe I'm missing something.

| THANK YOU!! I thought maybe I was being a bad yorkie owner in thinking that was a lot. The only thing I could think of was that there are so many teeth, that it was a cost "per tooth"...but still! |

Senior Yorkie Talker | I had the same problem with Taylor. She looked like a shark! I even posted a thread about it because it streses me out. She is 7 months now and most have actually fallen out but she still has double canines on the top and one extra at the bottom. She has not been spayed yet and the vet reccomended we do it when she gets spayed. In the meantime he suggested lots of chew toys, raw hide etc to help loosen them. they're still pretty tight but they are getting looser. How old is Oscar? People responded to my thread and said sometimes it can take up to a year old for them to come out. The price sounds EXTREME! I live in South Africa so i work in Rands not Dollars but if i do a conversion in my head that's way too high. It shouldnt be more than a spay or neuter cost in my opinion. Here i would pay R2000 which is the equivilent of about $300 max and I'm being generous in that price! Find a different vet...take your time there is no serious rush unles he is suffering with decay or something serious like that.

They probably do charge per tooth, but that is just crazy $$$. I'll say Ellie had oral surgery. Nine adult extractions, cleaning, xrays, OraVet, anesthesia (isoflurane), antibiotics, pain meds, IV fluids, monitoring, surgery on heated table, hospitalization for the day, heartworm test, gum curettage, etc. for about $600 something. And the place she had it done at was considered very expensive (not to me, but to most other people).

| That's just nuts.... way too high. Too bad they didn't wait just a little longer to do neuter so both could have been done at one time. Maybe they will still fall out, with the help of some chews & toys. My 2 lil girls both had a couple extra canines pulled yesterday during spay, and they only charged $40 extra per dog for the extractions.

| Lucky! Consider yourself lucky if all you babies teeth came out naturally. It does happen but very frequently they wind up with double rows of teeth. My little one has lost the bottom front baby teeth but the canines are hanging in there. She hasn't been spayed as yet (7 months) and that is the reason I have been waiting. Also wanted her to get a bit bigger as she is just about 3 1/4 lbs. |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Wow, it's only 5-10 dollars a tooth if you get it done at the same time as neutering, the anesthesia is usually what's expensive, but pulling the teeth shouldn't cost more than a neutering. Adult teeth don't have to be all in, in order to pull baby teeth, and I'm disappointed that your vet didn't have enough information on Yorkies to advise you to wait a month or so. Joey's vet planned the neutering around his teeth. The problem with a double row is that food builds up between the rows of teeth and can lead to faster tartar build-up, and other things. Has your dog lost any teeth on his own?

Donating YT 1000 Club Member | Heck, for that much money you could fly here to Florida & use my vet...they charge $2.50 a tooth How can someone do that...make their own crazy prices for things I mean? That's just wrong! I know you're in Juneau but please, find another vet for a 2nd opinion.

| Yes, they do get better some times. My Sophie had double rows on the bottom at 6 months and shortly thereafter one row (hopefully the baby teeth) fell out. She still has some other doubles, but I am waiting on the spay to see how much nature will take its course. She is 7 months & about 3 1/4 lbs now so I have a little time. |
