| Luxating Patella Questions On my last two vet visits, the vet mentioned Roxie having luxating patellas in her rear legs. I did a bit of research, and see that it's common in small breed dogs. If Roxie is showing no symptoms of a problem, how concerned should I be? She doesn't limp, and she loves to run around. She doesn't show any signs of discomfort or pain. She does do quite a lot of hopping around on her hind legs (we jokingly call her a circus dog when she does this). Should I be discouraging this action? Any info appreciated!

| What Grade are they? I would get your pup on a joint supplement (cosequin or dasuquin)... you dont have to keep them still all the time but if you can limit high jumping that would be good.

| Here's some info on what the difference between the grades are : OFA: Patellar Luxation Grades and some other info: OFA: Patellar Luxation Information Uni has grade 3 but has only hiked up one leg once. She is on cosequin and is doing great. How old is your yorkie, bc most young pups will always have loose kneecaps. They should be evaluated again when they get older.

I will get him cosequin too now...my puppy was 4 months when the vet told me he has looser kneecap than normal, now at 8 months the vet said he has LP. Can it still change?

| What grade? Callie has grade 2 in one and grade 3 in the other and they pop opposite of what most do and our vet gave us a vitamin for her. Callie loves to run and jump and everything and you can see them pop in and out but she never seems to act like it bothers her or hurts.

| Thanks for the link! I don't know what grade. I didn't know about the grades when the vet told me, so I didn't know to ask. I will have to make sure I ask next time. She is 3 years old.

| So, you think it is a good idea to give those supplements if there has been no diagnosis of LP? just as precaution?

| I think, if no LP, then supplements would be good for an older dog. But if young and healthy with no LP issues, I don't see the reason for the extra cost. Most high end foods like 4stars and up usually have some kind of glucosamine and/or fish oils, etc. But of course, always talk to your vet for the final decision.

| When I first got Jack, the first vet I saw said he was healthy. Then, I went to the same place but a different vet saw him for his last round of shots. She said he had grade 2 in one knee and grade 3 in the other. She said it was imperative that he has surgery to correct it right away and she has some vets she would recommend for me to contact. I didn't buy it at all. I took him to a different vet who corrected this misdiagnosis. The new vet said she couldn't even force his knee caps out so she couldn't even begin to tell me how this other vet could move them so easily. Moral of the story, get a second opinion from another vet even a third it you want. I had one vet check his knees during his first check up, another 3-4 weeks later and misdiagnosis him, and then had it corrected. Even now, I have having medical issues with Jack and getting him reevaluated. I understand that vets go to school for this but not all of them know everything. It's always better to be safe than be sorry.

| Thanks for the info on the supplements. I will look into it. Unfortunately, it was 2 different vets that told me about Roxie's knees

| That's a shame. Depending the grade, she may never need surgery. I think I would be more concerned if she was showing symptoms but since she isn't, I wouldn't rush into surgery. I'm not familiar with supplements... sorry But good luck! I hope she never has to have surgery.

| If she's not hiking her leg then I bet she's a grade 1 maybe a 2. A grade 1 simply means the patella can be manipulated out of place, but when let go, goes back into place. If a grade 1, you pup technically has LP, but why in the world would you want surgery for that? Remember Uni is diagnosed grade 3 and she has only hiked up her hind leg once.

| Sydney goes in tomorrow morning for surgery on both back knees (Grades 3 and 4). I had gotten a second and even third opinion. Both knees are bad. The third opinion said that I could wait until she was in pain, but the first two said since she's 9-months, it would be better to do them now. She has limped a few times. I have her on K-9 Glucosamine. Please pray for her. I am sorry for hijacking this thread. Didn't mean to, but I am very nervous. |
