| Heartgard Hi, I have a teacup yorkie 2.5 lbs at 2 1/2 months old. My vet said to give her heartgard starting on April 1st, the under 25 lbs one. Is that to much heartworm for her tiny body? |

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | Revolution makes one for 1-10 lbs if you feel uncomfortable. You may want to research a bit before you order anything or wait for more replies - I've used it but it was a long time ago |

| My vet prescribed the Advantage multi which is flea preventative and heartworm together as a topical. I like that it comes in smaller dosages too. I think it is for 3-7lbs.(not sure about the lowest weight I am at work so can't look at the box) It also protects against a lot of other intestinal worms, but doesn't protect against ticks and tapeworm.

| Heartgard I looked up Interceptor. I like what I seen. I would feel more comfortable giving this. What site do you buy it from? |

| I buy directly from my vet. I do not trust the online sources for pet medications, there is a lot of negativity about that.

| I should have mentioned that we also use frontline plus (for fleas and ticks). I mostly do it for ticks in our area (new england). I use both medications year round although I have taken breaks in the winter at times.

| Sentinel is another possibility. I've used it on four toy dogs with no side affects. They have a dosage for 2-10 lbs. One tiny pill; I put it in a little peanut butter and they love their "once a month treat." It prevents heartworm, whipworm, roundworm, hookworm. It also controls fleas by not allowing eggs to hatch. I haven't seen a flea since I got my first Yorkie in 1997 (he was infested when I got him).

I buy Interceptor from my vet. You have to be very careful with all the counterfeit products on the market. | |

| Just an FYI, my neighbor used Heartguard on their 20 lb. pug, and it had a severe reaction. I will not use any products made by that company. |

| I like Interceptor beter for toy breeds (not because of the dosing available for small dogs since it is still a huge overdose if you want heartworm protection alone...probably about like Heartgard, but because small dogs seem to do well on it). I've used both and haven't had any problems, but am more comfortable with Interceptor. I don't have a problem with Novartis or Merial though ( I think they do...okay for drug companies). Personally I would not use Revolution, Advantage Multi, or Proheart 6 for heartworm prevention. I would use Sentinel. I do buy supplements for Ellie online, but the heartworm med comes from her vet.
