| Sasha needs a snack! What do you use? Hello fellow yorkie lovers! So my new baby has been home about a week and a half now, and I want to start training her. I have a double sided question: What do you give your babies to snack on, and what little treat is best to use for training? My breeder recommended cheerios, but she doesn't like them. A lot of people on here also suggested I buy bully sticks, but she doesn't like those either. I cooked some bacon and tore up tiny little pieces to start training her with a few days ago, is that OK for her in moderation? I want to be able to give her a little treat to praise her when she pottys outside as well... I need help! Any advice you all can give will be greatly appreciated!

| Please no bacon...ever. It can easily trigger pancreatitis along with ham. never ever okay. Pieces of banana; peeled and cored apple; green beans; lettuce; berries; sweet potato; and boneless, skinless, lean chicken breast are all fine. A lot of dogs like Yorkie Yummies by Chattiesmom.

| Thanks for the tip. I had no idea about the bacon, I only gave her a couple of nips, not even a fourth of one strip. I'll check out the snacks by chattiesmom!

| yea bacon is a bad idea, from experience my father gave Sadie the littlest tinist piece ever and she had the runs all the next day... boiled chicken cubes is what Victoria Stillwell uses. we used cheerios, but now we have these 100% dried Salmon strips that we tear off tiny pieces of for coming inside from pottying and stuff like that, she gets a a few pieces a day which is great for a nice fish oils boost for her skin and coat. i used natural balance training treats and still tore them into even smaller bits sometimes because they are just too much for several minutes of training. sometimes i use petco cookies and tear those into tiny bits and give bits for treats as well. good luck!! |

| Oh the new stuff that sugarmamma makes is so awesome! PM her, and she has sample sizes too. They are dehydrated chicken or calf liver. You can break them into tiny pieces for training, and they are organic too. Uni went crazy for them. Please make sure along with no bacon and ham as mentioned above, no meat that is salted or fatty, like sausage, steak, hotdog, bologna, etc, etc. No turkey or chicken SKIN. Remember use TINY TINY pieces, no bigger than the size of a pencil eraser, and don't over do it, as they won't want to eat their meal.

| I experiment with treats, and he seems to like most things. Some trainers like Cheerios and my vet said they are okay. Also, as some others have already said, whatever you give your dog break it into really small pieces. Also, you only get a few seconds for the dog to relate the treat to the trick, so you don't want to be standing there trying to break a dog biscuit into small pieces. When training they will get a lot of treats, and they have really small stomachs -- Ruger just graduated from puppy school and often puked right after class. He has plenty of teeth, but I'm not sure he chews his treats. |

| Layla likes honey nut cheerios. She really likes the sweet potato wrapped in chicken. Tiny bits of course. |

| I'm all for fresh fruits and veggies, but not grapes! I used to feed my boys grapes with no issues, but I guess it can cause liver or kidney damage (can't remember which..it was one or the other though). I most often use oranges, apples, carrots, cucumbers, pears, peaches...just whatever I have on hand for myself For training, I use little training treats that I get at petsmart. They're little meat flavored things that my boys love, and they worked very well. I actually ended up cutting them in 4ths so that I didn't fill their tummies up too much during training sessions.

Donating YT 500 Club Member | We use Zukes for training - they are the perfect tiny size. For just a snack, I give Cheerios, apple pieces, or small bites of chicken breast.
