| A few questions about Nuetering Hi All... Sam is 8 months old (as of Feb 26th)...He is being Nuetered on Friday (the 5th) first of all this is my first dog and i'm a very nervous mommy...i have some questions that i'm hoping that you guys can answer or at least give me a little insight... 1. He's about 10 lbs...how many stiches can i expect? 2. How long does it usually take to heal? (i'm having it done on a friday so that i can spend 2 straight days home with him) 3. Since he's 8 months and already hit puberty will he still calm down at all? (i don't really mind his puppy hyperness but i can't wait for the days when we can hang out on the couch and snuggle together :-) 4. I bought an E Collar yesterday and i put it on him for a few minutes to try to get him used to it...he HATED it!! i'm really worried that that is going to make the whole experience worse on him. I saw all the posts about the soft collars someone here makes but there is no way i'll be able to order one by friday...i'm pretty crafty and i can sew a little...does anyone know how to make them? I also so the post about the onsies, i thought about that too...do you think that would work for a boy? Thank you all for any advice that you might have. I know i'm a total freak for worrying so much but he's my first pup and i love him so much...and he can't tell me when something is wrong. at least when my 5 year old son is in pain or sick he can tell me about it. poor Sam can't :-( |

IDK exactly how many stitches but the incision will be less than 2" and our vet has used liquid stitch for the outside. 2. How long does it usually take to heal? (i'm having it done on a friday so that i can spend 2 straight days home with him) Usually by the next day they are feeling considerably better and will continue to improve each day. Often times acting completely normal with a couple of days, although their activity should still be restricted. 3. Since he's 8 months and already hit puberty will he still calm down at all? (i don't really mind his puppy hyperness but i can't wait for the days when we can hang out on the couch and snuggle together :-) Being neutered and with him maturing I would think he will calm down somewhat, soon. 4. I also so the post about the onsies, i thought about that too...do you think that would work for a boy? IDK about the collars and onsies as I've never had to use anything like them - I've been lucky and not had any dogs bother their incision area.....but then, I'm home all day and can keep an eye on them. Hope this helps and good luck!

| thanks so much for the advice...my roommate keeps laughing at me, she says i'm going to go crazy on Friday if i don't calm down :-) he will be home alone starting Monday from 7-noon then 1-6 he isn't crated, i have a baby gate up in the doorway of my bathroom...he was tons of room, 2 beds, a toy box, food and water and a pee pad (which he never uses it's just for incase) i'm pretty sure that i'm going to have to use a collar during those hours that i'm at work. I can't trust him not to touch them even if he hadn't for the first 2 days. |

| I just went through this a few weeks ago with one of mine, and I agree completely with everything Jencar98 said. Mine was practically back to himself the next day, but the doctor restricted his activity for 5 days. By that time he was back to normal. I've never had to put one of my boys in a collar after neutering as it doesn't seem to bother them much. If your boy does seem to lick at the area excessively, try giving him a bully stick or other chew to distract him.

| Max was out of it the first day. He didn't move much just sleep on his pillow. He actually peed on the pillow and just sat there and whine until we noticed it. The E-collar is a must because Max enjoyed licking himself before the surgery. Used for almost two weeks just to make sure the incision mark healed. Within a few days he was up and about. Stairs was not his favorite thing until one week after surgery. |

| Hot Rod was out of it for about 3 days after his neuter. But he also had 14 teeth removed. After he rested up he was rearing to go and jumped on and off the couch before we could grab him. We had to really watch as he wanted to run around as though nothing happened once he felt better. check out the link in my signature as I have an alternative to the plastic e-collars. Feel free to pm with any questions.

| I know where you are coming from. Tomorrow Penny will be spayed. She is 6 months the 9th. I have been through this with other dogs over the years but one still worries. I called the vet office this morning to ask if I could give her some Nutri-Cal in the morning since she can't eat. The gal said yes if I wanted. I think she said yes more for me not to worry then Penny.
