| is it okay if a breeder does in house puppy shots? I am looking into getting another little girl yorkie, and one of the three breeders does her own in home puppy shots is this okay? She also is 10weeks old very tiny and has not been to the vet yet? She is the cutest little girl but I dont know if that is acceptable. Tucker had two sets of shots by the vet and vet checked when I got him! Please let me know your thoughts!! Last edited by Sarathegreat3; 02-28-2010 at 05:34 PM. |

| Lots of breeders do it. Some do it correctly and some don't. Quite a few vets won't accept breeder-given vaccines and will redo them. You'd really have to know the breeder's vaccine protocol and brands they use, match it to what the experts say, etc. It isn't all bad, but could be.

| I am in no means an expert, but I would check with your vet. Like mentioned above, I know that my vet will redo any shots that were not given by another vet. You don't want to run into having to have shots done again and overvaccinating issues and such. If you are buying from a breeder with a good reputation who is local to your area that might effect what you vet would say also (your vet might actually be familiar with/ suppling the vaccines being used) Jeri and Harley |

| The breeder is acually about 1.5 hours away. Is it okay that she has not been to the vet yet also? |

| I would absolutely never buy a puppy that hadn't been examined by a vet. Does this breeder offer a health guarantee? |

| I know some breeders do their own shots but before I decided to breed I knew I wanted my puppies to go to the vet for their shots and check ups along the way. I feel the vet can see, hear, feel and find things that I wouldn't know to look for so it was only right to have them vaccinated and checked out before going to their new homes. And, I agree with Ladymom...I would never purchase a puppy that had never been to the vet. Last edited by my2boyz; 02-28-2010 at 06:46 PM. |

| I really don't know I am trying to get answers out of her. The little girl is also very very tiny I personally think too tiny maybe, the breeder told me she is just 1 lb at 10weeks. I want a little girl but I dont want her to be sickly and untreated |

I think you are seeing red flags with this breeder. Trust your instincts.

| Why do you think a breeder would let a tiny pup go at this size and no vet check...how does she know the pup does not have a heart murmur, worms, ear mites on and on...??? There is only one reason not to take pups to the vet before selling...too save money..beware of breeders who cut corners on health care..beware of a breeder who sells a one pound puppy at 10 weeks...I would not sell a one pound puppy of any age...heartbreak waiting to happen...and the buyer gets to pay the vet bills. |

| I know it's hard not to fall in love with cute puppy pictures, but try to make this big decision with your head, not your heart. You are making hopefully a 15 year commitment to a living creature who will become part of your family and steal your heart. Finding the right breeder will make this a wonderful experience for you. Getting a puppy from the wrong breeder can be an expensive and heartbreaking decision. |

| Hey you aren't far from me!! Who is the breeder? Will she be taking the puppy to the vet before she leaves? What is her health guarantee like? What age is she letting her go? At only 1lb, if it were me I will be holding onto that puppy for awhile as that is too small to go to a home without worry of any hypoglycemia attacks. I have a little girl who at 9 weeks is only 1lb 5oz and will only be about 3lbs full grown and she will be staying here until she is 12weeks old or longer. Mostly likely a little bit longer as I want to make sure she if fully capable of leaving without no worry about any hypoglycemia attacks. Check with your vet and see whether they will accept the shots. I too do my own shots. I give the exact same brand as my vet and all the vets around here are alright with it. They do still get vet checked though as well as a fecal test and microchipped. Oh and you have to be careful, sometimes even having shots from another vet, they will try to talk you into getting them redone or giving too many. I once sold a pup that was vaccinated by my vet properly and the new owner's vet wanted to start the shots over. They had to switch to a different vet.

| Thanks that is what I was thinking but she was trying to make me look like the foolish one asking all of all those questions. I think I am going with a lady who breeds/shows in Ohio I have got good refrences from her. When I asked her if she was vet checked she told me "It sounds to me like you read a website of questions to ask a breeder" I informed her this is not my first puppy and I have never had this happen before. Cross her name off my list Thanks for the good feed back. I didnt think I was asking out of line questions |

She actually is a breeder right out side of detroit Mi. She is trying not to take her to the vet at all, and wanted me to get her later this week. She will not tell me if she will sign a health contract. So I just now told her no. I told her that a puppy that small should stay for a few more weeks and she told me that she will be fine just give her nutri drops every day.
