| I use Sentinel. It is a very small pill, given once per month. It covers heartworm, roundworm, hookworm, and whipworm. If your dog comes into contact with fleas, it will not kill the adult flea, but it will prevent any eggs from hatching and control fleas by breaking the flea's life cycle. Control fleas, and you will also control the primary cause of tapeworm. I've had six toy dogs on Sentinel, and they have all tolerated it very well. I have only had a problem with parasites twice (fleas once and tapeworm once), but in both cases the dogs already had the problem when I adopted them. Once on Sentinel, the fleas cleared up and I have never had any more problems with them. The pup I adopted with tapeworm has been clear ever since the shot given by my vet, and it was the only time I have ever had a dog that had a positive fecal test for any type of worms. Sentinel works well. You will need a vet's visit to get it. They will have to do a blood test to check for heartworm before they will sell it to you or give you a prescription for it.

| We use Sentinel as well. It seems to work good, we've had no problems with fleas or worms. I also like that it comes in a small dose for dogs under 10 lbs. |

| No dewormer is not the same as Heartguard. Not sure why he is getting a dewormer? Does he have worms? You can get Heartguard from your vet.

| I also use Sentinal. It's great and covers a number of things as some of the other have mentioned. Due to the area that we live in I also have to have anotherback up plan for fleas, so I also use K9advantix monthly and Capstars only if I see a flea on her. |

| I use Interceptor for Heartworm prevention (it also controls several types of worms). A 6 month supply from the vet costs about $35. For flea/tick control, I use Frontline Plus.

| You can go online and several pet med websites will have comparison charts. This way you can see all the benefits that they offer. Also, cheaper than the vet prices and most times free shipping. I tried Revolution last spring and liked it. As for the rabies tag, my vet told me he didn't have to wear it just to have your paperwork for proof. I only keep his ID tag on him. |

| You need to get heartworm medication or at least the prescription through your vet. It is not available over the counter. Dogs must be tested yearly to make sure they do not have heartworms because giving them heartworm medication if they are positive can be dangerous. It kills adult heartworms which can block the arteries in the heart and kill the dog. Flea medication is over the counter. There are a lot of counterfeits on the market so make sure you buy it from a reputable company. I get mine from Entirely Pets. Counterfeit Pesticide Products for Dogs and Cats | Pesticides | US EPA My personal preferences are Interceptor and Advantage. If your dog has seizures, it's important to avoid Heartguard and other heartworm medication that contain Ivermectin as studies have shown it can lower the seizure threshold. |
