| To neuter or not to neuter Hi All!! Sammy has an apointment this coming Friday to be neutered. After my friend heard me on the phone making the appointment she said, "why are you doing that to that poor baby?" this sparked a debate around my office on whether or not to neuter my dog let me give you a little back ground... Sammy will be 8 months old on the 26th of this month...He's about 10 lbs and very healthy. He is an inside dog and ONLY goes outside with me and he's on a 16 ft retractable leash and harness. The only other dog in our house is a 7 year old spayed beagle. He did go through a phase of "humping" the beagles head but i got him a stuffed dog and he only does it to that now My question is, since there is no way that he's going to "hook up" with any other dog (i'm very over protective of my baby) should i get him neutered? He is doing wonderfully with his housetraining. He spends the days and nights in my bathroom with a baby gate in the doorway so that he isn't all confined in a crate and when we are home he has free reign but he does wear a belly band because he dribbles a bit when he gets excited. I'm really confused now and i trust all you yorkietalkers more then anyone else when it comes to my little guy Thanks in advance for all of your help and advice!!! Kristy and Mr Sam Man :-) |

| I always suggest to neuter/spay your pets! Here's a few reasons; Altered dogs, on average, live longer, healthier lives. Female dogs spayed before their first birthday are 99.9 percent less likely to develop reproductive cancer. Altered dogs behave better and are more focused on training. You’ll stop overpopulation. One female dog and her offspring can produce 67,000 dogs in just six years. You’ll stop homelessness. Only one in four dogs find a permanent, loving home. You’ll stop the killings. More than eight million surplus dogs and cats are destroyed each year because there are not enough homes for them. Taxpayers pick up the tab to the tune of $300 million. Eighty percent of dogs struck by vehicles are unaltered males. The majority of dog bites to postal carriers are from unaltered male dogs. Pet licensing fees are lower in cost for altered dogs in many cities and countries. Removes the sexual urge and the chances of him wandering off (and perhaps getting hit by a car or injured in a flight). May reduce certain types of aggression. Reduces the risk of hormone-related diseases. Reduces the risk of anal and perineal cancers. Eliminates the risk of testicular cancer. Significantly reduces the risk of prostate gland problems. Males typically don't mark at all/or as much after neutering. Your dog is probably still not sexually mature at 10 months old, so if not neutered, be prepared for your dog to possibly change once over a year old. I would never own an unaltered male dog! I frequent the dog park and the only dogs we've had problems with (aggression, humping, annoying, etc) are un neutered dogs.

| A really nice, well behaved, loving, great mannered in tact male dog will make an even BETTER really nice, well behaved, loving, great mannered neutered dog. Not saying this to be rude, it is true! Neutering won't change anything about him you already love, but it will make him a better pet and help his life in the long run. It is not just about hooking up with another dog. The benefits of having a neutered pet are much greater than leaving him in tact.

There really isn't that much more for me to add. My boy was neutered at 1 year old, regardless of that he is still a 100% stubborn yorkie. His personality makes him such a mommy's boy that all he wants to do is be by my side. This made me confident that he would never run outside without me, boy was I wrong. He had to go potty bad and saw a chance to go outside and he was missing for 40 mins. Now that we live in an apt with my parents, they have automatic closing doors, well... stubborn yorkie almost got caught in the door trying to follow me out. My point, yorkies are stubborn creatures by nature, add testosterone and an ability to detect a bitch in heat miles away and he would be at least 10 times worse. I saw you mentioned that your baby is on a retractable 16 ft leash, and honestly, it could be a 3 foot leash and it still wouldn't make a difference. When a dog is sexually mature, and it's near a female that is ready for baby making then he will give it a shot no matter what the obstacle is. If they were to tie and you tried to pull him off of her then you would be hurting him more than helping. It's all really food for thought and only you can make the decision that is right for the both of you. Read up on all that you can get your hands on, make a pro con list if you have to, just really make an informed decision.

| neuter/spay ... just do it Monday was spay/neuter day for Bella and Mojo. I was a wreck - I feel their pain and was so worried about them. Two days later ... they are back to their rascally selves, and I am so glad it's behind us. I knew I would be doing this due to buying both a male and female close to the same age. One more thing: be sure to get your pup's teeth checked while he's under. The baby teeth that haven't come out, yet, may keep the permanent teeth from coming in correctly. |
