| My yorkie eats her poop! pls help :) Hello, my lil yorkie won't stop eating her own poop. I've tried some kind of powder my vet gave me, it doesn't work. So just wondering if this has happened to anyone else and what I should do. She's the cutest lil baby I've ever seen but I just want to run when she licks me right after she eats her own poop!! heehe! Thank you! |

| When Bandit was a puppy he ate his poop a couple of times. What food are you feeding? If it's not a high-quality food it is probably not getting fully digested and that may be part of the reason for eating it. Dogfoodanalysis.com is a great website to help guide your food selection. Also, I saw on TV once that you can give them a piece of pineapple and that will prevent them from eating their poop. GOod luck!! |

| First of all, welcome to YT! And yes, I have read on here that feeding your little one some pineapple will help them stop eating their poop. Like the OP said, possibly a better quality food would be helpful too. Good luck!

| available meds WE had that same problem. At Walmart they have a pill that costs about 4.00 for a bottle and it seems to be helping. We are feeding Science Diet, so i do not believe it is the food in our case. worth a try, so far so good for us! I heard of the pineapple, but less convenient for me. |

YT Addict | Science diet is not great. Anyway, our Derby does the same thing but he goes through phases. He likes to eat and play with it. He also goes after our socks and underwear (clean or dirty!) ew! so we have a gross dog with habits we can't seem to break! We feed him the best of the best food (Orijen) and I think he does it because he can.

| Keoki does the same thing but no as much anymore. Pineapple definitely helps- Keoki is on a raw diet- the vet told me it is an instinct to save themselves from prey- I found walking him outside where he can potty and walk away from it fast helps and if he goes on the wee wee pad inside i praise him and give him a treat and he wants that instead of his poop. It's usually only when he hides and goes potty that he still eats it I hope I was helpful I have heard it's more common than you think?! |

| My 1yr does the same thing and it makes me wanna gag when i see her eat her poop. We have to give her a special puppy food (you can only buy this by rx) so in my case i don't think its her food. The vet told me to mix some cooked cut up chicken with her food and it does work for us.

| My little Mylee does the same thing. She is starting to grow out of it though. I don't think it is the food, as I feed Wellness. I jokingly say, it tastes so good the first time, why not eat it again.

| Thank you!!! Wow Thank you all so much for your help!! You all are so welcoming with your help with the poo eating! HA! I feel aweful that my first post ever on Yorkie Talk was about eating poop!! My Annabelle just needs to get a little more class in her I guess HA! I actually feed her Science Diet, which it looks like I'm getting mixed reviews on it, so maybe I should switch to something else. And I'm DEFINITELY going to try the pineaple thing, that's something new I haven't heard of, then if that doesn't work I'll go to those walmart pills.... |

Thor's Human Donating Member | That's interesting, I'd never heard it was an instinctual thing to cover their tracks. Aren't wolves predators in the wild, though? Or are they hiding the poop from their prey? Doesn't it have to come out some time? That would explain why most dogs want to run away from it as soon as they're done, though. Thor hates waiting for me to get the little baggy out. "Mom, we have to leave! I POOPED!" Or when they try to kick dirt over it. I have heard that once developed, this is an extremely difficult habit to break. There are a couple other possibilities: - your dog eats her food too fast, and is not digesting it properly. Protein in the poop = yummy. That's why pineapple is supposed to help, the enzymes in the pineapple are supposed to break down the proteins. - for whatever reason, perhaps a low quality food, the dog can still smell that delicious protein in her poop. Honestly, I would expect in these cases that a LOWER protein food would help, but I can see why some fillers like corn might cause it to pass through the gut more quickly, leaving it undigested. - You can sprinkle hot sauce on it before they get there. I think a lot of dogs can smell the hot sauce, so they figure out when it's safe to eat, but I've heard this can help. - You can pick it up right away so they don't have a chance. - I'm sure with some work, you could train them to leave it when they are alone. You could probably teach them that a big old log when you come back means a HUGE treat, something they don't want to miss! And maybe that would motivate them to let it be. | Hi! This is also my first post and it's about my baby eating poop . He's almost 16 weeks and he plays and eats his poop. I clean up his poop right away but I have read that they imitates our behavior, so He's cleaning up his mess when we don't see him pooping? He eats Royal canin. I don't know how good or bad this food is, but that's the one the breeder recommended. This long weekend I decide to take a different approach. I haven't cleaned up his mess right away and every time he gets near it i say NO! and i ignore him a couple of minutes so he knows he's doing something bad. I hope I'm doing the right thing here. |

| Welcome to YT. Be glad your yorkie eats her poop. Ollie (my yorkie mix) doesnt eat his poop, he only wants to eat Sam's (my other yorkie) poop.
