| Innova EVO - hard and small poop Hello everyone! YorkieTalk.com - what a great source of info! Thank you! Niko is 2 years old. He is a very picky eater but after trying number of kibbles we had finally found that NutriSource Puppy (chicken and brown rice) kibble is working fine for him He would eat it fine and his poop was OK. We were happy. Well, since he turned 18 months, we decided to find him an adult food that would be a better quality food then what he had. After reading and reading the net, we decided on grain-free food from the "upper shelf" (based on the doogfoodanalysis.com) First we tried Orijen. He would not even touch it and the kibbles were too big for him. Then we started switching slowly to Innova EVO (grain-free) but his poop became smaller and harder. Also, we noticed that his eyes have mucus discharge (?). Now, we don't know what should we do? Should we put him back on the NutriSource Puppy or should we try to find him a best quality food that he will like? How about Acana? Are the kibbles as big as Orijen's? Any other recommendations? Please tell us what you think as we are very concerned. |

| I agree. When my boys are eating good food there is always less poop and it is harder. I read here that harder is good in helping naturally express their anal glands.

| Thanks for your reply. I think I was not clear enough By small; I meant small and dark (almost black). Every time he goes, he is constipated and his anus is irritated. In addition his eyes have this kind of fluid in the corners - I think this is called mucus. Last edited by Damian; 02-11-2010 at 07:56 PM. |

| We LOVE Acana grain-free!!! Bandit and Nala have hard small poop too...not to be too graphic, but it looks kind of like "deer pellets" it's not like a log anymore. They haven't had any upset stomachs and were on about the 20th pound of food and for Bandit that's a miracle If he's constipated try adding canned 100% pumpkin. That may help. |

If you have diaper cream or cortisone cream, you can put that on his little bum, to help w/ the irritation. Is the eye discharge greenish and/or does it have an odor? If yes, could be an eye infection....where you'd need prescription eye ointment.

Niko picks out the EVO (most of the time) and spits it out and eats the NutriSource! | |

| He might be getting too much protein. I would ask your vet the next time you take him for his check-up. I was told not to give my girls too much protein since they are not really active dogs. |

| We stopped mixing EVO with NutriSource. After filling up the bowl with NutriSource alone, Niko RUN to the bowl and ate it all! His poop was fine this morning and he has no eye mucus or irritated anus. I think we will watch him for several days and if he is doing OK, we will start switching him slowly to a new adult formula. Again, does anyone knows of the kibble size of Acana Grain-Free? Is it very small like NutriSource or is it the size of Orijen? Thank you everyone for your responses. |

| I just starting switching Jack over to Innova Evo kibble and moist food. We still give him moist food in the morning and evening. I like the fact that it is grain free food and extremely healthy. I don't know about the other kibble food you are asking about, but you might want to consider adding a canned food once or twice a day for the extra water content. Jack has never really drank a lot, so I like the idea of the moist food to add to the water he is receiving. I hope all works out for you and little Niko.
