Question One More Question

We have decided to accept the other puppy. I will pick him up tomorrow. He is eating, playing, and seems completely normal. He is 12 weeks old now. I am looking for another vet. I plan on having him tested for liver shunt before any vaccines and when he is a little older as I have read the test is not that accurate until a certain maturity is reached.
Now I have a new concern. I have probably spent too much time reading the sickness and health/diet forums here. Are there Yorkies out there who are healthy and do fine? I know my breeders dogs appear to have had no problems. I have spoken with the people who have dogs from the other litter and they're fine. I am hoping for a healthy, normal dog. Is there such a thing with a Yorkie?
Please don't misunderstand. We have always provided good care for our dogs. Our dogs and cats to this point have been strays or pound babies. We have paid for surgeries, and good health care, etc. I don't expect a dog to be problem free. I'm just scared after reading so many situations on here with sick dogs. I am hoping to here that there are more healthy Yorkies than not. Thanks.

Smokey is my rescue I got when he was 6 months old. He was a puppy mill dog and all of that, but the worst health issue I've had with him is the occasional upset stomach and minor allergies, which is maybe once every six months or so. I've had him for 2.5 years. Chip was sold to us through a broker and was very sick with hypoglycemia. He recovered from that, then somehow started getting severe vaccine reactions. He has a sensitive stomach and some bad allergies, but other that he's healthy too. Chip just turned 3 and we've had him since he was 7 weeks old.

Absolutely, there are healthy Yorkies all over.
The breeding of Yorkies is out of control though to keep up with demand, etc. etc. So a lot of them aren't healthy. This really comes down to the breeder. Pre breed testing needs to be done and the lines check for health problems.

My oldest yorkie has never had real health issues... he broke a tooth (I think on a bully stick) once and that is the only time he has been to the vet aside from vaccines and being neutered and he is close to three now.

It can be done,

Our Macho was with us for almost 15 years and Sophia is 5. Except for the terminal cases of ten feet tall and bulletproof syndrome, both were/are very healthy. Only problems are the ulcers and gray hairs they've caused ME.

yeah i have that question too

My dex is from a pet store - yep had no clue what a puppy mill was and he almost died of pancreatitis but other than that and ibd he has been pretty healthy - fingers crossed

so now do not laugh but i thought i was doing better the second time going to the penny saver - yep i know crazy and found a breeder who had AKC puppies so thought that meant had to be good WELLLLL guess again - she has atopic dermatitis, mvd, luxating patella 4 and hypothyroid - basically a horrible immune system

I also rescued from petfinder a maltese who is actually from a great breeder but it is a long story why she went to rescue at 8 mos but i would in a heart beat get another dog from this breeder as my maltese has been great other than periodontal disease but that is pretty common in toy breed

so it is a valid concern as yorkies are so inbred being the number 3 of the top dogs along with goldens and labs so being smaller, having smaller litters and greeders the breed has alot of auto immune issues just like if you inbred humans we would have problems so i guess the most important question would be for a breeder is are you inbreeding your line and look at the papers as the vet saw right away dee dee was inbred and called it right there and she has alot of problems

I love this breed and funny my friend was talking to a vet at the dog park and she told her all the issues i have had with mine and she still told my friend if she had a small dog she would get a yorkie lollll and my friend looked at her like WHATTTTT and she said when you get a healthy one they are a great dog. I will always have yorkies as love the breed and they are alot of fun but i will definitely do my homework next time and most likely rescue a 3 year or older one as then you know what health issues you are dealing with by that age.

yep 10000000% agree this is what is happening to the breed and the owner and the dog suffer when it happens

I think it is possible to spend so much time reading about sick yorkies you do begin to think there are no healthy ones out there. But take heart, there are many healthy yorkies, you just don't hear or you mind doesn't take in that the majority of yorkies here are healthy dogs. In other words, the sick yorkies stay in your mind, the healthy ones you don't worry about, so they don't stick in your head as much.

Good luck with your new puppy and hopefully you'll have many happy, healthy years together.

Btw, I've have two yorkies, one a puppymill girl with the exception of one time pancreatitis, is healthy. My boy Reno caught kennel cough once from a foster yorkie but otherwise has been perfectly healthy.

I'm praying my 5 month furbaby comes out healthy. The way she fights I don't doubt it.
You had a very bad experience but everything happens for a reason. Once you hold your new one you will feel the joy of motherhood once again.
