Vaccine Death?

We had our 11 week old puppy for 3 weeks. I took her for her first puppy visit and she received the boardatello and the DA2LPP/Corona First Vaccine. She was perfectly healthy before that. That was on Wednesday. On Wed night she began to drool quite profusely. I called the vet on Thur a.m. and they said it was probably a reation to the toothpaste they had given me. As Thur and Fri progressed she got increasingly whinier. Saturday morning about 4:45 she had a seizure and another at 6:45. We took her to the vet at 8 and they kept her saying it might be a shunt. By Saturday at 11 p.m. they called to see if we wanted her revived if she quit breathing. Sunday morning at 9:30 we made the horrible decision to euthanize. She was having continuous seizures even under maxium doses of Valium and phenobarbitol. We are completely grief stricken. The vet firmly declared that the vaccine had nothing to do with this, but I just can't believe it. Our breeder is devestated as well and has made the very kind offer to give us another puppy from the litter. If we accept this offer I am so confused about vet care and vaccines. My heart is broken. I feel like I blindly handed her over to be killed. She was a Christmas gift that my husband saved and saved for. Any advice about what do to.

Im very sorry for your loss. Im not sure what to think of vaccines anymore. My yorkie gets the intranasal kennel cough, and I swear ever since shes been getting it, she hasnt been the same. Sorry again.

I'm am very sorry for your loss.

Yorkies are very prone to liver shunt, and that may have been the problem. However, this breed can be extremely sensitive to the lepto vaccine. Even if it was a shunt, the lepto could've made things worse. That isn't to say that this vaccine should never be given, but the benefit usually doesn't outweigh the risk. Unfortunately, if a shunt was present, it was genetic, so any replacement pup from these parents could also have the problem.

Her name was Sophie. It has been a long dream to have a Yorkie, but financially we werent' able. My dh really sacrificed to get her for me. I just feel like my heart has been ripped .

I believe my boy was given unnecessary vaccinations and he was given them too early. Our 1-year vaccinations are coming up, and I am switching vets and following Dr. Jean Dodd's recommendations (detailed in the linked thread).

it was definitely the vaccines so get a new vet if you get another puppy and they should NEVER EVER give all those vaccines at once to a tiny puppy. I am so sorry and to blame the tooth paste GIVE ME A BREAK i have never heard of the toothpaste causing a reaction like that EVER

I'm so sorry. I always keep a bottle of Benadryl after they get vaccinated. It was not your fault don't feel bad. I recommend you search for a vet that specialise in toy breeds.

If you accept the other puppy from your breeder, find a vet who specializes in toy breeds as suggested, and have them test immediately for shunt. Then follow the vaccination guidelines in the link I posted above.

Sophie had not quite made 3 pounds. She was 2 lb 11 oz on the Saturday she went to the hospital. The other puppy we have been offered is a little over 4 lbs. I wondered as well if her small size made the vaccine worse. Would there have been any sign of a shunt before she got so bad? She was completely normal and playful until the evening after the shot.

with liver shunt they walk along the walls, spaced out after eating, picky eaters, seizures

When you took her to the vet after seeing problems and they did a wild guess with liver shunt they should have at least ask you if you wanted a test done. There are a few test that can be done and if she would have come back positive surgery could have been an option.
You had a bad vet who is doing the minimum for his patients. So whether it was the vaccine or liver shunt they should have been more prepare. And he cannot confirm it was not the vaccine because he did not perform an autopsy.
If you do pick another pup from the same litter please get a liver shunt test perform.

The only time she did this was about a week and 1/2 ago. I took her to see a friend who has a poodle and a whippet. The poodle was all in her face. She walked against the counter and the wall there at first - I thought it was to keep the poodle away from her because this way she was behind chairs etc. She did it just a little in their hall but mostly played as she got used to the other dogs. Could this one time event have been a sympton of a liver shunt. That is the only potential symptom I saw till the seizures started.
As regards the test they did a liver function test that was normal. They were waiting till Monday to do the bile acid test, then they decided to go ahead and do it, but by that time she was too sick.

Reactions to vaccinations are another typical symptom of liver shunt.

As mentioned the breed has problems with lepto and due to their size should be given vaccines separately. Not combined.

I'm so sorry you lost your Sophie like this......Your pain and sorrow is completely understandable........It wasn't your fault in any way. The vet was put in the position to administer the best and safest care possible. He was supposed to be the professional, he was supposed to inform you of the risks and benefits of the medical procedure. Whether the pup had some underlying medical problem or the vaccine caused it may never be known. Considering the symptoms where so closely related to the vaccines I would highly suspect that was the cause. But what he did was wrong.......

It absolutely amazes the ignorance that vets have when it comes to administering vaccines to our pets. A combo vaccine should never be administered to any pet. Administering that vaccine was equivalent to a beloved pet of being exposed to seven different diseases, all at one time. It was a tremendous assault for the immune system to handle. Small dogs are particularly vulnerable to adverse reactions..... Giving combo vaccines (multi-valiant, polyvalent) and/or several shots at once greatly increases the risk of adverse reactions as well as the risk that the vaccines will interfere with each other, resulting in neutralization or negation. The vaccine also has totally unnecessary components in it, as in Corona, Bordetella, Lyme etc.

The reaction rate increased significantly as body weight decreased. That is, small dogs were at greatest risk for a reaction. Risk for dogs weighing 11 pounds or less was 4 times greater than the risk for dogs weighing 99+ pounds. I have always been shocked that a Chihuahua puppy and an adult Great Dane are given the same dose shot. They get the same volume of virus or bacteria plus the same volume of adjuvants (boosting agents like aluminum), preservatives (like mercury), and antibiotics. All these ingredients are known to cause vaccine reactions.

If it where me I would look for a vet who is following the newer vaccine protocol, they are few and far between.....Briefly that would entail, only the core vaccines given, no boosters, no combo's, space vaccines 3-4 weeks apart, and rabies after 6 months and given seperate from any other vaccine, flea or heartworm products......I highly recommend doing research on overvaccination .....I has helped me tremendously......
