Edgar is approx 7months old. He is humping a little bit and showing his little thing to us (occasionally). I asked my husband if he thought I should get Edgar neutered to calm him down and he said:
"It's because he's young. He won't do it as much when he gets older. But he's your dog and it's whatever you want."

My husband had a small dog when he was younger and they didn't have him neutered...so, is he right? I'm not sure if i want Edgar to go thru the sugery and i can bear the occasional "REallY happY to SEE yoUs!"

I know that dogs will still hump after being neutered. But does the number decline with age?

I am debating the same thing. My Cooper is 6 months, and has started to hump alot. I really dont want to get him fixed, but i haveto get his baby canine teeth pulled, and I dont want to put him under again. I dont know what to do either. HELP!!

I have a female yorkie who is spayed, but if I were to have a male, unless I was planning to breed him, I would definitely have him neutered. My daughter has an unneutered yorkie who marks...lifts his leg on things inside and out. Therefore, the little guy has to wear a belly band while inside. I don't think it bothers him, but I would think he'd be more comfortable without a belly band.
I think marking is one of the problems seen with a lot of unneutered male dogs and it seems once they start, they never stop!

Some dogs get excited and hump while playing and some dont. even females can hump.

yes, i know the girlies get dominant, too. we have one of those.
Edgar is marking, but he isn't doing it inside. i let him out constantly and we haven't had a problem.
I have noticed however, since he began destroying the animals he humps and i haven't been replacing them it doesn't happen as often.
i dont' plan on breeding him.
i know that there is a minimum age for neutering. is their an age limit?
so many questions for such a small dog! but he's my dog and i know you all understand

If your not going to Breed, I would get him done.
They will mark when they get older all over the house.
And if you have a Female in heat somewhere around your
home, he will try to run out to get her. That's why we had
Poncho done. I don't think there is an age limit. Poncho was 2
The girl down the street has three girls, I didn't want him
running down there. Good thing we did have him done,
because now we have Princess.

I would say go for it. He might start marking and that is a pain in the butt, something that you don't want to have to deal with. The surgery sucks, but girls have it worse, and it's better just to get it over and done with. It's a responsible desicion to get him neutered on your part, and when you take him out to play with other dogs you wont have to worry about him getting other dogs pregnant etc. Also he is young, and may develop aggresion so neutering would probably nip any of that in the bud too. I say go for it!

I cant see any good reaon not to neuter if you are not going to breed. It stops alot of undesirable behavior. My dog was fine with his neuter and was acting just like normal when we brought him home. Our female was a little disoriented after her spaying but even she was back to normal by the next day.

Jo was neutered at 7 months old. Before that he was pretty independant and seemed to only want attention on his terms. Now he's more of a snuggler and he wants more attention than he did before which is great because I thought he didn't like me or something. Now I know it was just those teenage hormones running amuck! He just gets sweeter by the day and I'm lovin' it!

I had the same debate with Cooper. He would hump toys but not anything else. He was marking outside then began marking inside. The marking got worse and worse. Every item that had a corner in my home became "his spot". I found puddles near wall corners too! He'd mark right on the outside of my living room area rug -- never on it -- just outside all four corners.

I finally couldn't take it any longer and called to have him neutered and his teeth removed.

His surgery was only three weeks ago and he's marking alot less - only a few attempts in the last week. He NEVER humps toys anymore. It was like he came home from his neutering and had given up his nasty habit!

Oh -- I mentioned to my daughter today that Cooper seems to be much more kissy lately. I guess it may have something to do with his neutering! Didn't think of that before.

If I had to do it again . . . I would do it sooner than I did! He was 7 months old.

Just my real life story.

and thank you for the list of info. i did have a bit of a worry about cancers. i guess since i'm not used to being around male dogs that have their cahonies i dont' know what to expect. his behavior doesn't really strike me as agressive. but i suppose that it could be.
and i definately wouldn't mind him being more loving.
