| DRY hair and flaky skin! HELP!! Okay, so I got a new puppy about 4 weeks ago and she is PERFECT!!! She is 22 weeks old (approx. 5-5.5 months). The only problem we are having is that her skin is VERY dry and even flaky in places. Her hair is also more dry than normal. She was on Eukanuba puppy when I got her, so I started there. I gradually changed her food to Blue Buffalo...and she LOVES it! I want to keep her on this food because she eats well and has had regular poops...(TMI moment--small and non-smelly)! I used baby shampoo at first, also tried the vet recommended shampoo with Vitamin E. She also gets fish oil poured on her food every day--it's the fish oil from the vet, but it doesn't seem to be doing any good. I don't know what else to try!!! Any recommendations on oils or ANYTHING I can try??? The pic is of sweet Baby Hope!!! hope.jpg |

Baby shampoo works for some people, but it dried out my puppy. I have read many good things about BioGroom's Fluffy Puppy and I like the BioGroom silk creme conditioner (available at PetSmart or online). I used John Paul/Paul Mitchell Tearless (available at Petco) when my guy was a pup. | |

| Thanks! I guess I should clarify...the breeder was using baby shampoo on her when I got her, so I only used it for a few days...because OBVIOUSLY, it was not working. So then I switched to the stuff the vet recommended which really hasn't made it better or worse. I have also tried Redken (read on here somewhere that it may help)...with no change either. I will probably order anything that people tell me to...or at least go in search of a few samples! I am DESPERATE... I forgot to mention that her hair is also quite thin! Any more suggestions? |

| When my furbabies have dry skin I use virgin coconut oil on them. I put a dab on fingers and rub it all over them. It does help with dry skin. I would also recommend a shampoo made for animals. Baby shampoo will make it worse.

| In the wintertime I cut back on baths. You might want to cut back also and see if that helps.

| I have the same problem with Maya! I dont give her a bath every week. maybe every three-four! I was thinking that maybe the combination of dry air, and the fact that they are changing coats is the reason for that....? what do u guys think? |

| we can't go that long without a bath, Wicket gets very oily looking after a few days, Teddy always finds some way to get stinkie, and grace the jack russell is always muddy from the creek or puddles, she sometimes gets a bath everyday she also white. if I have to bathe her more then once a week I use buddy wash. I think the flakes are from dry air heat.

| Yeah, going more than a week without a bath is pretty difficult for us. She just finds ways to get messy! After 4 or 5 days she looks greasy..but still has dry hair...and she can get into some MESSES!!! So, I will definitely try to space her baths out more...but there HAS to be another option!! ANYONE??? |

I've not used Coconut oil on their skin often, as I don't have dry skin problems. But, I know giving them coconut oil to eat is supposed to also help with dry skin. And, you're right, baby shampoo is one of the most drying shampoos.

| yes it does as i have used it for years with my allergy girl and it helps maybe do a 1/8 tsp every other day to start and see if that helps - someone on here sells it and sells coconut chips for treats - just not too much fatty acids as this breed is prone to pancreatitis |
