| Chewing on metal concerned! Pann loves to chew on metal , I heard it's because he's missing something from his diet does any one know what that could be?! I'm in school for sculpting so metals pretty abundant around here and I'm worried about him swallowing a shard or breaking his teeth! His latest favorite to chew on was my bronze box, that's on display now so he doesn't have access to it but he loved to chew on the bronze I think that was his favorite, and now he's trying to chew on steel! Please any ideas? |

| Puppies will chew on and swallow anything that is available. You will have to keep things away from him if you want him to continue to be healthy.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I'm not sure how old he is, but the whole first year they are teething, and even after that, they have a need to chew on things. We buy Merrick bully sticks for Joey, they are a very hard chewing stick, and take the place of bones, in the wild a dog would be chewing on bones, but bones can be unsafe, so that why we use Bully Sticks. Not all bully sticks are alike and some have higher moisture content, which make them more of a treat than a chewing stick. You should have things your dog is allowed to chew on, and keep the other things out of reach when you aren't there to train.

| I give him tons of treats and chew sticks and toys to chew on but whenever he sees metal he goes crazy! He's about to turn 6 months old. I'll try the bully sticks thanks for the advise. |

| Yes. That's a puppy for ya. Mine used to go for the rocks in my rockbed in my yard. I had to temporarily fence it so she didn't destroy her teeth.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Well, if he has plenty of substitutes to chew on, perhaps it is a pica; this is where there is a craving for non-nutritive substances. Sometimes, it's caused by an iron deficiency anemia secondary to hookworm infection. So you might want to get him checked. Pica is also seen in obsessive-compulsive disorders, and behavior therapy can be use to treat this. Cesar did an episode where a dog went nuts over rocks.

| Sounds like teething. When Callie was teething she liked hard things. They have these rings that look like teething rings that are three different shapes all hooked together and really hard plastic and for puppys at petsmart and petco maybe you could try those.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Yes, I think that may be it since pica is seen with hookworm. Do you know if the pill he's taking contains iron, or is it to treat the hookworms? I would ask my vet about an iron suppliment, what kind and what dosage would be correct. In my opinion, it's more than normal teething. Make sure you tell your vet that there are plenty of chewing toys and sticks around, but the puppy wants to chew on metal.

| Sophie would grab a small rock out of the garden in the yard and smuggle it into the house when she was about 4 or 5 months old. I was afraid of tooth damage too. Thank goodness they were baby teeth. She liked them because they were small enough and light enough to throw into the air, like playing catch with herself. I substituted a small lightweight lufa toy for cats and it worked. She is so funny when she throws that little pink lufa toy dog across the room or in the air and chases it

| I was just wondering if lead is a danger. I know it is for our birds. They love to chew also and there are alot of metals that have lead in it. We lost a bird years ago to lead poisoning. Would that be a concern for puppies. Also Missy is chewing on the cement board that is under our wood stove. Does anyone know if that could be dangerous to her? She has plenty of chew toys too. I rubbed a little dish detergent on the corners and that seems to help alot. |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Sentinel is used in the prevention, control, and treatment of various worm infections, including hookworms. My guess is that your dog may be suffering from an iron deficiency due to the hookworm infestation. Sentinel, doesn't contain iron, but I would ask my vet if it were possible that your dog has anemia, and ask about supplements or injections. I just don't believe that what your dogs is doing falls in the normal range. There's a fairly simple blood test that would show if your dog is anemic.
