| Doesn't want to eat, seems weak Hey all, I just got my yorkie puppy, and he's so cute I want to gouge my eyes out , but anyways, it's been the third day I've had him and he seems to not like to eat. I took him to the vet yesterday for the first time and they said he was healthy (took his temp, weight @ 2.1 lbs, etc.) but I feel like there's something wrong with him (but it could be that I'm misinformed). It's my first time having any sort of pet (never even had a goldfish or anything), so I've been hard at work reading just about everything in this forum and trying to get everything right. He's about 10 weeks old, so I'm not expecting much, but he plays for like 5 minutes before walking over to my lap and curling into a ball, then proceeds to nap the day away.. Not that I'm complaining or anything but he seems very weak most of the time and eats very little, if at all. He seems to like the soft stuff in a can but I don't want to serve him that all by itself so I mix in some crushed Royal Canin Baby Dog 30 but he never eats enough of it (maybe like a couple bites) before it gets all hard and gross. I've read on the forum that yorkies are very picky eaters, but I don't cook so I can't make anything for him, and the one thread in this section with all the foods on it is so confusing I just stopped reading it. Isn't there one BEST food out there for a yorkie? I guess my question is: Is my little friend normal? Or am I forgetting to do something? The vet said that I should be worried if he doesnt play, which is what's happening. |

| others may be able to help you more but are you giving a little nutrical if not eating much? that might help as you do not want him to go hypoglycemic - did vet mention that to you as ours did when i got dex and the next day he got it so i rubbed honey on his gums. You may want to get a tube of nutrical if your baby is not a big eater- how much does your baby weigh? |

| also i would call vet and discuss if he said this could be a concern. i always worry about picky eating with this breed as it relates to liver shunt but do not want you to panic as could just be getting adjusted to new home mine are all 6 now so maybe some of the breeders and new pup owners can share more as it has been a while since mine were pups but i just remember dex getting hypoglycemic and scared me - he was fine once we got pedialyte and nutrical in him and before i got it i rubbed his gums with honey - he was about 2lbs back then too i recommend having pedialyte unflavored and nutrical in fridge ready to go Last edited by dwerten; 01-31-2010 at 02:24 PM. |

| Even if you have to buy steak and fry med.rare and hand feed him, DO IT. Also buy some puppy Nutri-Cal. This baby needs to get used to eating. Feed him a little every three hours, and give him the Nutri-Cal as suggested on the tube. I've home cooked for many many years and swear to it. Feed your baby real food. It's better and safer. Good luck with this young one. Please read these. Also buy the book FOOD PETS DIE FOR by Ann N. Martin. Dead Cats And Dogs Used To Make Pet Food Closer Look At A Rendering Plant The Dark Side of Recycling

| Your baby was given to you to early. The first two weeks you need to have him in his special corner whether is his crate or a place he favors in his new environment. He will be quiet for about a week after that you will see a hyper lovable furbutt. Give him some wetfood I give mine Merrick Puppy food. Slowly start smooching dry food and eventually he will be satisfied with dry. Don't let people be around him his scared right now, if his depress he won't eat. And I agree get him some Nutri-cal the vet should have offered that to you. Good Luck!!

| I am a first time yorkie owner as well. I haven't had mine very long. But, my breeder had me to smash cottage cheese and plain yogart in her wet food for 2 weeks to keep her eating. I also put a little nutrical in it. It worked for us. She ate fine. They don't eat very much at a time anyway. Good luck. |

| Thank you all for the food advice, I floored it to walmart and bought some Karo and honey, then rubbed a little at a time in my little guys gums and 15 minutes later.... voila! He was jumping around like mad and took the smelliest dump I've ever smelled, but I digress.. I guess he was hypoglycemic after all... |

| Ryoonc, As w/u I'm a new yorkie mom, too. So I'm still learning. I don't claim to know everything & I get confused reading about the yorkie. Had the same problem about food, too. Anyway, just wanted to re-enforce what already been said. Keep Nutri Cal on hand. Read up on "hypoglycemic". I understand this can happen to new babies. In time they should out grow the chances having hypoglycemic. Hypoglycemic, as best as I can understand, it's kind of like a dibetic. A puppies tummy is very small & they need to eat something every 3 hrs as mentioned in earlier post. In order to keep their sugar count up. Concerning food. I use Wellness can food. What works for my yorkie is: I measure out an amount of wellness, then I add 1/2 of a boiled egg (w/o the yolk), add some tuna w/the juice. She loves it. Sometimes I'll sub eggs for green beans or steamed carrots. Baked chicken or turkey can be used in place of tuna. If I cook noodles, I'll save some back for her. You don't have to be a chef to cook for a yorkie. Just few things to keep in mind. When buying canned veg. get the unsalted & no fried foods. It's "really" not that confusing. Keep the food bland (no spices, salt, pepper, etc.) Yorkies won't know it nor will beagles as I have one. And PLEASE remember, when you notice your baby isn't eating, its time to ACT. Hope you can stand one more suggestion. Start a savings account for your baby. Vet bills can get out of hand. I read on this forum where one lady didn't have any money to take her yorkie to vet & the poor thing died in her arms. She wrote minute by minute on this forum as the poor thing was dying. I was so Mad. I have an account for my girl. As of today, I've saved $1200. Hope I never have to use it. Some moms suggest insurance. I'll be thinking of you. Rule of thumb....Go with your gut instinct. If you think theres something wrong, there probably is. Oh, I was concerned about your vet. You never answered rather or not your vet suggested the nutri cal? If not, than I would certainly question him. I have an appointment tomarrow to interview a vet as I'm in the process of changing. The vet I have now is ok with bigger dogs but I'm leary about his knowledge on small dogs. Please be sure & update us in few days. |
