| Spay questions I'm going to have my Bella spayed soon. She is 34 weeks old tomorrow. My vet wanted to spay her back before Christmas but I didn't set up the appointment as I wanted to wait to see if she got any bigger first. I'd say she's probably from 2.5 to 3 pounds right now. I'm really nervous about having her put under the anesthesia. I've been reading some information about this and I guess I wanted to post so that I don't miss anything. I know that he will do laser surgery and he says that this will make her recovery easier. I know that they should only use iso or sevo anesthesia. I also know that I should have blood work done before her spay. Should she have all the blood work done or just the CBC? I looked at this link BLOOD-TEST-EXPLAINED I'd like to know so that I can talk to the vet and make sure that he's doing the right thing and that he's aware. Is there anything else that I should ask the vet to do/make sure he's doing? Also, I'm going to be having my mini-dachshund spayed at the same time. She's 30 weeks old and weighs about 10-12 pounds. Should I request the same bloodwork for both? Thanks so much for your help! |

| There is an anesthesia protocol in the health section. I printed it out! It says CBC and pre-op bloodwork

| I would go ahead and do bloodwork on both as this will give you an indication of anything that might be going on...of anything. My philosophy is better safe than sorry. Hope this helps. Good luck with both the spays.

Hot Rod was slightly under 3 lbs as was Maggie May and they both did fine. We had full bloodwork done on both for their procedures so we wouldn't have any surprises. Good luck on your decision. I would speak with your vet and decide on what is right for your little one.

| spay questions when my little guy was neutered I asked them to check his teeth also since I didn't want him "put under" again. He was about 7 months & ended up having to have 13 baby teeth pulled at the same time. For some reason he didn't loose his baby teeth & had double rows of teeth. He was around 4 lbs at that time & did wonderful. No problems at all. |

| About to spay Munki.. I have to schedule Munki to be spayed within the next few weeks before she goes into heat and I am wondering what to expect as I've only had a male before. I read the previous posts about the girls being less playful at first, but is there anything else? Also she is only about 3 lbs at 6 1/2 months old, is that too little for the laser procedure?? Any and all advice would be helpful, thanks! |

| The sticky about anesthesia about covers it all: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...-protocol.html Some additional considerations: make sure your vet is very experienced in small dog surgery. Have the blood work done a week ahead of spay, the more comprehensive test & a little more expensive (CBC & chem panel) they send out, rather than an in-house blood test on day of spay which is limited. Be prepared for after care, keeping them quiet, restricting jumping etc., know how to protect site from licking, and if the vet says pain meds are optional take some home anyway just in case you need them in the middle of the night. Having them in surgery will be one of the most stressful days of your life, but hopefully it will all go well and they will be home recovering in no time.

Weight is determined by genetics, diet and exercise. Even an unspayed female can become obese. Good luck, and take all necessary precautions before and after spay.
