| Dog is eating own poop! Why?? This is embarrassing to ask, but why is my dog eating its own poop? She started doing this about a month ago. We've changed her food until we found one she liked better than the rest. I can't say that the food change coincided with eating the poop. We just try to keep it picked up when she accidentally goes inside the house. But, when she goes outside, it seems like she always finds some old poop and chows down. Does anyone have any suggestions?

| ^^^^ That's true. Also it could be that your doggie is eating the food too fast not allowing her body to absorb the nutrients. Try feeding a little handful at a time. Don't just put the bowl down and walk away. Does she eat other dogs poop too or just her own?

| My Sasha does the same thing!! Sometimes she tries to take it, knowing that I don't allow it, and tries to get it like 3 times really fast it's cute when she tries to get it but it's gross when she actually gets it!!

| It is fairly common around here. A few solutions others have used are feeding pup a little pineapple every day for a while (it breaks down the protein in the food making it less appetizing). Or put a little meat tenderizer on her food, and pet stores have other stuff to put on food that makes poo taste bad. Some young pups pick up the habit cause their mom's clean up their poo. Don't despair, they usually get over it.

I agree. This is my own theory as to why Bella was eating hers for awhile as a puppy. I believe we were feeding her Purina or Iam's, but when we switched to Pro Plan she stopped the nasty habit altogether!

| OH MY Goodness you arent alone. We had to elevate our cat boxes to keep Hollyhock from getting into the "kitty rocca" as we call it. It is just so disgusting.

| I'm right there with you with Bijou. I've actually got an appointment with my vet on Thursday to have her checked for any parasites that may be causing her to want to eat it. which I don't know how they'd miss it before since she's still a pup and has been wormed and checked and on heartguard meds, but you never know. But she eats my other dogs pooh right after they go if she's outside with them. It's soo weird. If she is left outside at the same time the boys go out she will bark a lot and jump at them like she's trying to get them to go if they do she will try to eat it. I've intervened once I seen this is why she was barking so wildly when they all go outside. I've had to stop letting them out together until I can get her to stop this nasty habit. I've tried giving her the pills from the pet store (it's Excel deter Coprophagia Treatment) they work, but once I stopped giving them to her after the two weeks recommended she was right back to eating her pooh again. I've done all the changing of foods with her too. She currently on Wellness. Was on Innova puppy then Evo and it didn't work, so I thought maybe she wants cheap stuff so we tried the purina benaful (sp?) she loved it, but still ate her pooh. The scary part is that it gives her runny pooh and I've seen some blood in there so I set up the appointment with her doc and canceled her spay for now. Plus I seen the recall on the medicines so I don't want to take any chances. I'll ask the vet about them when we're there on Thursday too. I'll let you know what the vet says if you like. Just PM me as I'm sure this thread will be lost in all the new ones. I feel your pain

| Thanks everyone for your replies. Betty Boop, aka The Boopster, is eating Purina One Puppy. She is 6 months old now. I got her at 3 months old. I brought her home with a bag of Eukanuba from the breeder who said that is what she was eating. When I got The Boopster home, she wouldn't touch it. So, I bought other foods that were very high quality and she would only pick at them. She eats Purina One Puppy better that any of them. I know the 3rd ingredient is Corn Gluten Meal. Yesterday I bought Royal Canin Yorkshire 28 (for puppies 10 months and older). Is this a high quality food? If anyone has any suggestions on high quality food, I sure would appreciate it. To get her to eat I add a teaspoon or so of boiled chicken with a little broth. Am I doing wrong by doing this? She will nibble what is left all during the day. I leave the food. She is such a light eater and that is why I leave it in the floor. Oh, I almost forgot, I've caught her eating the cat's poop when we are outside!! I have to watch her like a hawk!!!! and also FOR hawks. I've seen hawks and owls in the woods next to us. I worry about that. I never leave her alone.

| We had that problem with our Boston mix The Vet suggested sprinkling 'Forbid' on her food. You can get it from your Vet. It did the trick and she eventually outgrew the desire. It really was disgusting while it lasted.

Avoid any foods that contain corn, any kind of meat by-products, wheat or soy. Look on the Royal canin bag, there is corn in it for sure, maybe a few other no-nos as well.

| I just bought a bag of Wellness today. Hope she will eat it. It looks like it is full of good nutrition. But, it seems The Boopster is like her mother......she prefers junk food! LOL Seriously, I appreciate everyone's input on this subject. I've got to break the cycle somehow.
