| Spaying a really small yorkie and using human fish oil questions. I have a 2 part question. I had Fiona at the vet yesterday due to some hair lose she has suffered. She has extremely dry skin. My vet reccommended (amoung other things) I take human fish oil pills and pucture them with a needle. I am to put the liquid on Fiona's food. Another YT memeber told me she may have read that giving dogs human fish oil is a big no no. Has anyone heard this? Possibly it is a bad thing if you give the whole pill not the liquid inside?? While we were there he asked about having her spayed. She is 9 months and weighs 2.8lbs. I have heard the horror stories of little ones not coming back from surgery. Should I or should I not? There are benificial reasons but there are great risks too. I want to do what is best for her despite my fear!

Donating YT 2000 Club Member | What kind of food do you feed? They sell skin supplements just for dogs. I have a girl over 1 and around 2 1/2 pounds. I have not found a vet I am comfortable with spaying her. Most around here are old school. I would really like to have it done but won't until I find a vet with alot of experence with small yorkies.

| I have had her on science diet for a while but she hardly eats it. I am currently looking for a food someone recommended on YT called Blue Buffalo. I have seen commercials and it sounds nice. I will have to check it out when I finally find it to make sure it is as nice as it sounds. I know what you mean about the vet being old school. The vet I use is very good and does deal with small dogs but I am still afraid.

| My vet said that human fish oil was okay so long as it was true fish oil. I really do not remember what she said. It was a pain to prick the pill though as I would get it everywhere. It is a lot easier to get the ones for dogs. Just be careful that it is not too fatty. My vet offered to read the label to see if it was a good kind that I had been feeding. Maybe your vet can do the same. Good luck on your decision to spay. Maggie was just under 4 lbs when she was spayed and did really well. She was out of it for the first couple of days.

| I'm not sure if it would be the same with dogs but I know fish oil can increase the clotting time in humans. So I would be aware of this if she is going to be having surgery soon. |

About the Fish oil. We use to give that to our pekingese all the time. But we did NOT give the hole pill , we broke it and put the oil in his food and threw out the shell of the pill. It worked great for us and it made him have a wonderfull coat as well. Good luck

| I have been adding a fish oil capsule to Zeus' food since May. He no longer has dry skin and his coat is very shiny. I just use a knife and puncture a hole in it and squeeze it onto his dry food. I use Nature Made fish oil for humans. Sorry can't help with your spay question. Best wishes! |

Note: Because omega-3s inhibit blood clotting, avoid taking fish oil supplements two weeks before and one week after surgery. Consult a doctor before taking the supplements if you have a chronic blood disorder. http://www.fishoil4health.com/fish-oil-dosage.html i would have spay for sure as females can get pyometra if not spayed and not bred and it can be deadly and your baby is 9 mos so before first heat would be best and it can also avoid breast cancer in them Pyometra & Uterus Infections in Dogs Here is safest way to do spay pre blood work panel, free catch urinalysis propofol, isoflurine, iv fluids and catheterization If your vet does all of this then you should be fine | |
