| Who has dealt with a broken pelvis? When I got Fergie from the shelter, we knew she'd suffered some sort of injury. She had reduced use of her tail but she did not seem to be in any pain. She was ouchy on a hind leg when I got her (Nov. 20) but this quickly resolved. These days she runs around and can even jump on the bed (I just have mattress and box spring on the ground but it is still quite high for a little dog!). She never shows any sign of discomfort except that during/after defecating, she turns around and looks/nips at her butt sometimes. I wanted to know the extent of any injuries, so when I had her spayed this week, I asked for a set of x-rays. She has a broken pelvis and a broken tail. They want to operate, remove the tail and repair (?) the pelvis. Not sure of details. I am going to get a 2nd opinion from a vet friend but after reading a lot online, it seems like simply restricting exercise (which has already been done between caging at the shelter and mostly being crated with me because I am at work all day and then she sleeps on the bed at night) is a more common treatment than surgery. Has anyone else been through this? Your thoughts? Oh, and she isn't a puppy - she's 2 and has already had puppies. The good news is, her spay went off without a hitch! |

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | Oh wow - since no one answered yet - I'll post but only have a little advise....make sure she doesn't have to jump up and down on anything They sell steps or you can make your own....I did that for my bed since it's high....I made my own with some plastic bins and cover them with blankets so it's a soft land.....it works great. The rest of my apt has real steps for the couch and a chair near the window. They know to use them and it prevents jumping. Even with small dogs with no problems -jumping can cause broken bones and aggravate other existing conditions.... I do want to say that good for you rescuing her and I hope you find a way to help her - how did that happen do you know ? |

| We don't know for sure, of course, but my vet says she was most likely hit by a car before the shelter caught her. She was never claimed by her owner and would have been PTS if I hadn't adopted her. I really wish people would be more responsible with their animals - now I have the tough choice of whether to risk major surgery or not, and if she doesn't make it through the surgery I'll feel awful, but if I don't do it and it causes problems later...same thing. |

| I have had a few with broken pelvises. It really depends on the extent of the fracture and how many fractures there are. Some can recover just fine with strict crate rest. Others do need surgery. Just to give you some idea....and I don't want to frighten you, but you need to know this. I had a call from a vet one day about a yorkie who had been dropped at a shelter in LA and he had chewed his paw completely off. I immediately sent my son there and we got him into the specialist in Houston the very next morning. In reviewing the entire case this is what had happened: He had been hit by a car and the owners could not afford the surgery. He had 4 fractures of his pelvis and it was luxated at the spine where the sciatic nerve passes. They took him home and crate rested him...no clue how these people did not see this pup chewing, but when we got him the entire paw was gone...just bones sticking out. I was horrified when I saw him. He did that because he was in pain. He ended up with his leg and part of his pelvis being amputated...the good news is he lives in TX now and is a very happy and loved little pupster! SO.....it is very important that a good orthopedic vet take a look at this pup and the xrays! I hope it is a simple thing and crate rest will repair it.
