| If there are MUCH better foods on the market.. Why do vets recommend Science Diet? I ask b/c my moms shi tzu just went through a major sickness and they only told her to use dry Science Diet and gave her a little to take home then told her to buy it at the pet store or them after. Anyway, I try to tell my mom it is really not that great of food and if they did not feel he needed special food as in an RX than she should try something better. He has been given Pedigree for years. Yeah when we got our dog she thought I was silly for researching dog food. I tried to get her to take the Wellness info to her vet and ask him about it or just try that. I just find it silly to pay just about the same on Science Diet when she could be giving him something MUCH better. |

| probably 1 of 2 reasons 1- Vet's dont get a lot of schooling in nutrition- so they just don't know better 2- they are paid by the company to sell the food. |

YT 2000 Club Member | well my vet doesnt recommend science diet and they sell it.. SO NOT every vet recommends it. That being said...being that your mom's dog just got done being sick, did they put her dog on a prescription science diet??? Like i/d or r/d.. if the dog was put on a special diet then I highly recommend the dog stay on it.. if not that if she is happy with switching then switch away..

| Well, Hills does have a few nice rx foods (and I know that is arguable, but sometimes they are necessary) and vets get used to the brand because of that. Hills is also into nutrition education for vet students and they do give out free products, so it is just what vets have learned. With any food sold at a vet's office (no matter the brand), the vet will be making money on it most of fthe time whether it is SD, Iams, Innova, etc. There are vets out there that don't constantly push SD or Iams though...

| She picked him up today and was told to just keep up what she was doing but to cut out his wet food she would give him, so now she will just feed him the Pedigree. No RX for dog food or anything. I am trying to talk her into switching once he is back to his old self. They have no idea what was wrong with him. |

I agree with this post. I have a dog on a hill's prescription diet and it has done wonders for him. Although its not the BEST food out there, it is clearly doing what it needs for him. My vet is not a huge fan of grain free diets, but she didnt try to persuade me to use something else, she did say that the "food is to new" to the market. Anyways, I hope your mom's dog does better and please when you do switch do is slowly and over time so its tummy has time to adjust so there wont be any more issues.

My Tiny Treasures Donating Member | I agree. I've also taking some Vet. Asst. classes and they are taught about nutrition, actually there was alot in the classes I took. I personally (and the food for our babies will always be a personal choice for sure) just have had the best luck feeding Life's Abundance. I will be honest and admit I've switched them off and tried other brands but came right back to the LA food. Oh and to the OP, I know what your saying..the SD foods are very highly priced and you can get a Premium Healthy food for their price! Quote:
