| coconut oil and pancreatitis I recently read in this forum about coconut oil. I also read in the internet that there is alot of benefits in giving this to our pets. I will like to start giving it to my baby but she recently had pancreatitis about 2month to be exact, and Im afraid that this oil will affect her and she will have a flare up on her pancreatitis. Does anybody know if it is safe for my baby. I already ask my Vet but she said that she does not know nothing about giving coconut oil to dogs. She suggested for me not to give it to my baby and to give her Omega 3 fatty acids. I also read in the internet that coconut oil is better and lighter than fish oil. Can any body help me with this question. thanks |

| My puppy had pancreatitis and when I told the vet that I had been giving her coconut oil she said it may have been the cause, but I do know others have used it and have had wonderful results. She did LOVE It tho!!

| What kind of food are you feeding her. Mitzi is allergic to some foods and the Vet put her on Hypoallergenic food but it has 19.0 % of Protein and 18.9% of fat which Im scare to give it to her and her hava a panceratic attack. |

| i would NOT DO THIS as while it is rare that fatty acids can cause pancreatitis it can so i would not take any chance with a pancreatic dog adding any fatty acid to their diet - i gave coconut oil to my allergy yorkie BUT NEVER my pancreatic yorkie even though others told me it was ok i will not chance it as it is still a fatty acid so it is a risk and a dog that has had pancreatitis before is at a greater risk of getting it again very easily here is the risk and the link There are few side effects of fatty acid supplementation. At high doses, the most serious, but rare complication, is pancreatitis. This is an inflammation of the pancreas that can cause pain, diarrhea, vomiting, and dehydration. | Is there a particular reason why you want to supplement with coconut oil? Why is your vet recommending omega 3? Coconut oil is a medium chain triglyceride which is good for dogs with pancreatitis. That is, it's better than some other fat sources. It can be found in some rx diets. However, I would be very, very careful about giving any fat at all that is not part of an rx diet to a dog who has had pancreatitis.

| thank you all for the info. I wanted to give coconut oil to my baby because she is dry and also itchying . I have heard that coconut oil is good for that . I have read alot about it and its said that it has lots of benefits but since my baby had pancreatitis I dont want to chance it in making her have an episode of it. I much rather her have dry and itchy skin than to have her in pain. |

| I also dont give many treats, yorkie yummies chicken and brown rice and also cherrios.. thats it, no more bully sticks, Laci does eat california natural which has 11 % fat content which I thought would be okay since my vet didnt feel Laci had a serious case of pancreatitis. I have to admit my kids were bad about giving her bites of this and that and she had alot of treats, so basicly I am just sticking to boiling her chicken and white rice and the california natural small bites!! http://www.naturapet.com/search/
