| Nutro Max Puppy Dog Food I was wondering is Nutro Max Puppy good food for my 3-1 yr old yorkies? I have been feeding them Iam's puppy for a while but one out of my three puppies always makes loose stool the other are fine. I have just began mixing Nutro Max Puppy with Iam's. I have been doing alot of research and found out alot of bad reviews about Nuto Max even a recall back in April 2007. The reason I started my yorkies with Iam's is because I have a 2 yr old German Sheperd and fed him Iam's since a baby and never had any problems but have always wondered if corn is really bad since dogs and humans dont digest corn. Now Im wondering if I should stop feeding them Nutro Max Puppy. Last edited by JamAo454; 12-26-2009 at 10:42 AM. |

| See this thread on kibble ratings: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...ing-chart.html There are better choices out there. Get some free samples by contacting the manufacturers of the premium foods: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...e-samples.html Personally, out of the contact list for free samples, I wouldn't ask for samples of Artemis, Canidae, or Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance --- they use Diamond as their manufacturer, which was pretty much the epicenter of the recall due to melamine contamination. They also use ethoxyquin as a preservative, which is carcinogenic. Once they send you the samples, you can try them out on your pups and see which ones they like. It is then very simple to go to the brand's website and see who sell it in your area, or order online. I'm feeding Nature's Variety right now. There are 5 kibble varieties of their Prairie line-up, and I think at least 2 of their Instinct (grain-free) line-up, as well as canned and raw. You can switch between them without transitioning, which will keep your pups from getting bored with their food. After mine make their way through the NV line-up, I'm going to try them on Fromm, which has a lot of variety, too. If you don't want to go to the individual manufactures and request free samples, you can go to Lukesallnatural.com and they have a sample pack you can order for $19.99. They stuff a flat rate box full of samples, based on what you tell them you need, such as puppy, adult, or all stages, kibble size, allergy problems, etc. They've got good prices, too, if you want to order the food online.

I agree.. there have been too many issues with nutro, alot of consumer complaints regarding sick or dying/dead animals. Im sure you can google them for more info. There are alot of good quality foods out there now, you just need to find one that your pup will eat and do well on. I also agree that you need to get samples first and go from there, I wouldnt run right out and purchase a big bag untill you find one that your pup will eat. Merrick is a good company that offers different varities and they have a grain free line also, EVO is great, as well as Orijen and Acana (same company). I am now feeding EVO and Acana, both grain free and my dogs like it. Do lots of research and check out a few different companies. Good luck!!

| I appreciate for the information but I think in my opinion any dog will eat any sample you bring to them more if they are hungry. I have done alot of research from different dog food from Merrick,Nature Variety Prairie,Innova Evo,Acana to Wellness Super 5 mix and most of the reviews people have said good and bad things about each one of these.I have google just about every where and getting no where. So its really hard to find out which is true and when you go to your local pet store they always tell you that the higher price tag is the best quality food."Bologna" The reason Im too concerned is because my two females might be pregnant and I would like to give them the best food there is while they are pregnant. |

| my vet gave me some good advise. Alot of the dog food companies do not have strict quality control guidlines, therefore you are better to stick with one that hasn't had recalls due to sick animals. She stated purina, iams, royal canine, pedigree, and eckunuba (sorry about the spelling) are all good companies that offer several different formulas to match the dogs needs. I personally tried several different brands and worried about the quality of the food. She suggested putting them on royal canine skin and stone, it is sold throught the vets office. My female was switched to the puppy formula when we found out she was pregant. She has alot of skin issues but hasn't had them since being on this formula. It's a tough decision because we want our babies with us as long as possible. We have always fed our golden retrievers purina lamb and rice and lost one of them at the age of 13 years and our other one just shy of 17 years he still weighed 76 lbs and was the love of our lives. I am curious what owners feed their yorkies that live past 10 yrs. This might be a good guide |

| You should go to the section of the board where the breeders discuss these types of things. They could give you a good idea of what they feed their own dogs when expecting: Breeder Talk - YorkieTalk.com Forums - Yorkshire Terrier Community

| A bunch of Nutro max products were recalled a couple months back. I don't know if that's still in effect but it might be worth googling. There was also a thread on here about it but I'm so freaking busy at work tonight I barely have time to read this!
