I'm interested in this as well. These look like the type of bones that I just picked up today. I guess I'm a little confused now. I took the marrow out of the middle, but do I need to cut the meat off from the outside of the bone as well? At least some of the large chunks of fat I cut off, but is it the meat parts that help to clean their teeth? Sorry Viv, I don't mean to hijack your thread or anything. I'm interested in what others have to say about these as well.

| I've never tried these but they look like they'd be fine! We'll probably pick up some of the femur bones for recreational chewing. xoxodoglover89, I replied on your other thread too but you don't necessarily have to cut off the meat. Those of us that feed prey-model raw give raw meaty bones as entire meals. Of course we feed bones that can actually be consumed (the femur/marrow bones are too dense), but the point is that the meat is totally fine for them to eat if you're comfortable with it. I would cut off some of the fat though.

| These large marrow bones are from the femur or a cow, and are load bearing, meaning they are VERY dense. Raw feeders call these bones WRECK bones instead of rec-reational bones as they will break teeth. I would never feed these huge bones. If you want the teeth cleaning and jaw benefit of bones, feed a chicken wing or cornish hen leg quarter (depending on the size of your dog.) If you just want teeth cleaning benefit and chewing exercise, use bully sticks. MUCH MUCH safer for small dogs than these large teeth breaker bones. |

| Hmm there are some older threads on here which refer YT'ers to femur/marrow hones from the butcher. Anyone else have any imput?? xoxodoglover89--NO PROBLEM babe!!! I am looking for a recreational bones Snick can knaw on, not to consumer totally. Snick is raw fed, but I am not ready for him to consume entire raw meaty bones, just want some for him to chew. I hope I get some more feedback. Thanks- Snick & Viv

| Viv, I've never tried those but I probably would if they were available locally. In the meat department of my grocery store they usually have packages of 'Pet Bones'. They're pretty well cleaned of meat, and must be what the butcher has left over. But they're very cheap and my guys love them. I don't give them to them often anymore since we discovered bully sticks but I do still buy them occasionally, just as a recreational chew. If I don't find them already packaged up, I'll just ask the butcher and he can usually round some up for me.

| This is just my opinion, because I've never actually GIVEN femur/marrow bones, but I would think they would be fine for Yorkies. I think the problem with them is more for big dogs, who can put the whole bone in their mouth and *try* to eat them, therefore causing tooth damage/breakage. As for Yorkies, I'm not sure that they could even begin to *try* to eat the bone so in theory, it would just be recreational chewing for them (like scraping the sides of the bone, etc.). I don't know. I have heard of many other YT users giving these, though.

| Yes, I just give them raw. I don't know what the bones themselves are called because the packages always just say 'Pet Bones". I know the ones I buy are beef and sometimes I can tell just by looking that they're way to big for my guys. I've found them at my grocery store (Reasor's) and at both the Neighborhood and the Super Walmarts. They're just mixed in with the other meats by the ground beef, roasts, ribs, etc.

| I have given my boy the pork femur bones. What I did was take and saw them in half since a whole one just seemed like to much for him to eat in one sitting there is quit a bit of meat on them. He will eat the meat and chew on the end a little bit. |

| I bought the exact one I showed in the picture am defrosting it right now to remove the marrow and Snick is following me around like a crazy boy. I let him have it for 2 minutes to see what he would and he went nuts for it. I'll let you know how it goes. I'm pretty sure it's a guaranteed hit. We also have just a plain white femur bone that Snick chews on from time to time but I think with some of the marrow and meat still in the Primal bone, he will be more inclined to chew. I bought a 6 pack of the buffalo marrow bones which are actually really small and cut down for toy breeds for about 10 bucks. I went to my local grocery store (Miejer) and the butcher said she didn't have any but showed me where they have them for future. Smiles- Snick & Viv

| Yup...he totally loved it. He went at it for a good 45 minutes, then I took it away, stuck it in a freezer bag and put it back in the freeze. I only left a little bit of marrow in the center for flavor and whatever minimal there was on the outer portion of the bone. I laid down a towel for him to have the bone on and he stayed right there the whole time. Awesome!! - Snick & Viv

So does Meijer carry them and yours just happened to be out? Or do they not carry them at all? I bought some like the ones in the picture that you showed from a little market on Van Dyke between 23 & 24 Mile Road. They were like .69 cents per pound. They gave me 6 and it came out to $1.59. 1 or 2 of them were a little big so I'm not sure if I'll use them but the others were the perfect size. If Meijer carries them though, that would be even better because it's much closer to me.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Hi Viv...I haven't tried the Primal bones, only bc if I give raw bones, I usually just get the ones in the grocery store - but the Primal bones look fine to me, just a little more pricey maybe? Whole Foods, btw, does sell "bones for pets" too - if you have one near you. If the bones have marrow still in them, I tend to remove pretty much all of it as it is soooo fatty - bc of yorkies' propensity toward pancreatitis as a breed. Personally, I do think it's okay to give these smaller dogs the large REC/WRECK bones bc those bones are SO big, that a yorkie can't even really do any damage to the bone or their teeth (in *my* experience, I should clarify). So, the difference is -- you can either give Rec bones for recreation, or consumable bones (i.e., Raw Meaty Bones (RMBs) w/ all the meat left on if you want them to have the bone and meat as one of their meals.

| I bought them and let Laci try them, she did like them. They are supposed to be much better then store bought bones as they have no chemicals in them. The pet boutique nutritionist told me only to give them to her for about 10-15 minutes because they are very filling and often times the dog will not eat its next meal because they are so filling. I took it away put it in a baggie and back in the freezer.
