| Over feeding Hello YT! I'm new to YT, as well as a new puppy parent. I have a yorkie mix. I have a few few questions and would love any responses/advice I can get. Mocha is 4 months old. I feel like I'm over feeeding him. He still eats 3 times a day, for a total of 1 cup of food for the day. I divide the 1 cup into thirds, is this too much? According to the dog food label he is suppose to eat 2 1/2 cups per day, which to me seems like a lot, but I'm unsure. Please help! I dont want to overfeed my furbaby. Thanks in advance for your comments and advice. Happy holidays, |

| Until your puppy is at least 6-7 months of age I would free-feed. Because Yorkies are so small and tend to have problems with hypoglycemia, it's important for food to always be available. At this age it's too early to be worrying about overfeeding. Little puppies need to be fat anyway . Once he hits 1 year or when you switch to adult food, you can start to portion his meals.

| Pearl is 6.5 months and 3lbs 7oz, and she has never eaten the amount on the bag, and I pretty much free feed her. I will leave her 1/4 cup in the morning, and she will eat about half at breakfast, and then the rest for lunch. I leave another 1/4 cup around 5 or 6, and she grazes on it, but sometimes doesn't finish it before breakfast. It makes me a little nervous because it's 1/2 of what the charts say for her to eat, but she seems happy with plenty of energy and is pooping almost every time we go outside, so I guess that's just how much she needs to eat! |

YT 2000 Club Member | Jasmine will be 1 on Christmas Eve and Prissy is 7 and we have always free fed and neither one over weight, however we have a big yard so they get plenty of exercise.

YT Addict | Derby is 5 1/2 months and we free feed also. He gets 1-2 cups a day total, but he's also a 10 pound Yorkie so he eats a bit more. The older he gets, and the more excercise he gets the more food he wants... but if he's not hungry he doesn't gorge on it either. It'll sit there. Sometimes he has 1 cup, sometimes more. Never more than 2 though and that's REALLY pushing it. I tihnk you're fine. |
