| How many green beans? Does anyone know how much green beans I should add to my yorkies meal to help her loose weight. I feed her what the bag says to for the weight I want her to be but she still needs to loose about 2 lbs. Right now she is getting 1/2 cup a day of kibble. Thanks! |

Metabolic Energy Requirements For Dogs is a neat calculator for determining an idea for how many calories they need. I would suggest entering in the weight she is now, and the weight she needs to be just to get an idea. Dog Food Calculator is a nice one for figuring out how much food they need from a specific food. (You'll need to use the one towards the bottom - if you have your bag of dog food you can use the info from the label or just look up the dog food manufacturer on the internet - they should have it listed in the analysis posted online.) Its not a bottom line answer, but it can give you something to go off of when it comes to feeding. When it comes to the green beans, you can pretty much just use common sense. If it looks like too much or your dog gets some digestive problems/poop looks really green you're feeding too much. Last edited by Dame; 12-08-2009 at 05:02 PM. Reason: edited for clarity

| I feed green beans as a "potty treat" lol...about a one inch bean for after potty, or to get her back in the house...If I give her to many, she gets a bit loose...I think, for my 5 lb. yorkie about 3 beans a day is enough...You can cut a bean into about three treats...Feeding in w/a meal, I'd cut up into small pieces to make about a tablespoon...Try that for a day or two, and see if you will need to add or subtract... |

| Are you feeding fresh green beans ? Make sure they are washed. If you are using canned green beans, be sure to rinse them off good, they are full of salt preservatives which won't help with the weight loss. My babies love fresh green beans, it was recommended by their vet for fiber, seems to work good. They have been maintaining their girly figure of 4 lbs and they are ages 10 and 12 yrs. old now. | I buy the frozen green bean because they have no sodium. In the summer when fresh are available I buy those. Jada has a tendency to pack on the lbs. I give her 2T of kibble in the morning and about 1/2t. yogurt and for dinner 2T of kibble with about 1T of green beans cut up. For treats she gets frozen sugar snap peas and carrotts. About once a week she gets a little boiled chicken for treats. She has went from a little over 6lbs to 5lbs6oz. at her last weighing. She is very short and compact and that extra 1lb really porked her up. She looked like a little stuffed sausage link!!!LOL

| Someone brought out a good point about fresh green beans...I only use organic green beans, and soak them in the kitchen sink in vinegar water...You should, definitely, soak in vinegar water, if they are not organic, to get the pesticides off of them... |

Ugg. I am in the same boat. My one girl PACKS ON THE POUNDS! I switched her to a low fat food by ACANA but it isn't grain free and now she is itchy again! I like the idea of cutting back on kibble and adding green beans. I give the girls green beans from the garden as a treat in the summer, but I am going to try putting her back on the grain free kibble and giving her a few green beans cut up. I feel so bad for her because she LOVES her walks (which help stave off some of her weight) but now that it is cold out (even though she has a very warm coat) she just wants to go back inside where it is warm!

| If I buy frozen green beans do I have to soak them also. I usually put a little water on them and put them in the microwave for just a second to thaw. Is this ok? |

| I buy the organic frozen green beans from TJ's & nuke it in the microwave for a couple of seconds, dice about 2 long pieces for ea/furbaby & mix it in their kibble. They LOVE it & it provides x-tra fiber to firm up their stool. Buying the frozen ones are better since there's no sodium added (canned) & it's already cooked. Dogs can't digest raw veggies.
