| Anal Glands? How often do anal glands need to be emptied? Capone just got his done about a month ago, but he's carrying around a foul smell on him and he's been licking himself a lot. (does anybody know the smell I'm referring to?) When I looked it up everything said anal glands. Could it be something else or do I need to get the glands expressed again? Thanks!

| It sounds like his anal glands need to be expressed... I would call your vet and see if they do that. I have had my groomer do it, but I definitely would not feel comfortable doing it myself

| Some groomers do this at every grooming. I never let them do it as if their stoold are firm enough they will empty on their own. I would take him to the vets and let them show you how to do it if necessary. If you have hime groomed don't let them do it as it may then need to be done every time. Just my opinion. I've bred and raised yorkies for 20+ years and never had to empty them except when they had some problem with soft stools |

Thor's Human Donating Member | The smell is usually described as "fishy". Most dogs with firm stools exert enough pressure on the glands when defecating that they don't need their glands expressed. Thor's first owner always had them expressed when he was groomed, and I never do. He's never needed it. However, some dog do need it done regularly. It's a good idea to have your vet show you how to do it, since not all groomers (or vets) do it properly. They can squeeze too hard, or not fully express them. |
