| Yorkie loves RAW Food! Was finiky 1st day but just stick it out! Hello everyone, I am brand new to this site. I love all the information exchanged between everyone. I think it is not only helpful but gives others the freedom and resources to get others opinions and hear their experiences. We all know vets use technical terms or just tell us something here nor there about our little one. I have done extensive research and well since my yorkie was diagnosed with a bladder stone, i have been very stressed on what to feed him. Teddy had a few seziures a while back, none since but needs to gain weight and he was recommened the HILLS diet but no weight, looks like he lost weight and muscle mass. Is this food even any good??? NO i really in my heart do not beleive that. I do believe that it prevents stones although my baby does not look well more fragile. So after extensive research, buying books, asking for advice, contacting my vet, who agreed to put teddy on BARF but cautioned about bacterias and infecting family members , i decided to put little Teddy on BARF or raw food yesterday. Yesterday he was very picky , sniffed and walked away. Did not eat all day. But when i got out my own food he was jumping all over my legs. I didn't budge, and at second feeding i sprinkled romano cheese and he basicaly licked it off. Then what happened? In the evening i gave him his 3rd feeding for the day and viola he ate it all and then sum. I give Teddy 3 small portions per day since i believe he is hypoglycemic and needs to gain weight. Teddy loves raw food and this morning was asking for more. I didn't hesitate to give him another tiny portion since he has to gain weight. Raw food not only sounds but looks nutritious. I will keep everyone posted on how Teddy does. With his weight and after his stone is removed. But first we gotta get his weight up. That is our main goal. | I've been feeding raw for about 3 months, and hear about this bacteria, etc...how does a human get it? Is it in the medallion and touching it is the problem, as I never touch the raw w/my hands...I use a clean forcep like utensil to take out the raw and put it in clean baggies to thaw out in the fridge overnight...I use the knife to get the medallion out of the bag, and place it on a thoroughly clean stainless steel dish and cut it up in bite size pieces... Do all the medallions have a certain amount of this "bacteria" in them, or would this be a faulty product made by the vendor? Thanks for any info you have about this...However, if I had to take Apple off of raw, I'm not sure she would eat anything...OMG'sh does she love it...And she looks absolutely wonderful!!! |

| Hi, I think you are being very careful and that is graet. Maybe even wear gloves, disposable of course, when handeling the meat. I have touched the raw meet and jus washed my hands with hot soapy water after. I also rinse and wash the bowl that i give Teddy the food in and pour steamy hot water on it for a while and wash it. I have heard about those medallions and have heard nothing but good. Yiou can always contact the manufacturer. Although i am going to go to humangradepets store this weekend to buy them. They seem more practical. Right now i have purchased 4 hamberger looking type patties and I feed almost one of them a day to Teddy. I also bought a container with ground up meat (turkey), with bones, and veggies, full balanced meat, much cheaper but i will have to deforst the entire thing or at least half way, split it up, saran wrap it and put back into the freezer. Not bad just more work. Anyone have any other suggestions???? |

| I have started feeding Daisy the raw medallions. She loves them. It is a little hard for me because I eat a vegan diet, but I do cook some meat for my family. I like to cut them up (the medallions, not my family) while they are frozen (if too hard, leave out for a few minutes) and put them in baggies so I don't have to do it every day. I wear gloves, of course, and just make sure to wash all surfaces that have come in contact with the meat. You need to do this with all raw meat, not just the dog food. We are still new at this, but after 2 weeks now, things are going well. I still leave kibble out all the time that she snacks on. I just make sure she brushes her teeth before any kisses!

| Wow, I wasn't touching the meat to protect the animal, not me ...So does this mean that the meat always has a certain amount of bacteria in it? I don't wear gloves, but I do wash everything in hot soapy water, after meals are served...I've never thought about Apple kissing me, after she eats???? Someone did tell me they didn't feed raw, because of grandchildren...However, I was thinking that would be an issue, only if the food were to be bad or processed incorrectly, not just in all the medallions? Can anyone clarify this for me? |

If you wash your hands well with soap and properly clean any surfaces the meat have touched, you will be okay. The problem comes when people prepare raw meat and then without cleaning their cutting board or knife, prepare cooked foods and vegetables, etc. on the same surface. Just use common sense.

| Sweet Apple, to answer your question, raw meat products always have a certain amount of salmonella, e.coli, and other bacteria, which is why meat must be thoroughly cooked before WE eat it. Dogs however, have a much different digestive system that prevents them from getting sick for these bacteria. They have a shorter digestive tract which doesn't give time for bacteria to colonize in their bodies. They also have lysozymes in their saliva which kill bacteria as well. However, salmonella is also present in kibble so it really is everywhere. To be honest, it's not that important to be super careful with raw meat. I wash my hands and the dog bowls with warm, soapy water after feeding, and wipe down counters with vinegar and hydrogen peroxide after preparing it (we feed prey model). Occasionally I use bleach but I try not to because it's harmful to us, the dogs, and the environment. We've never had a problem with anybody getting sick. It's important to expose ourselves to SOME bacteria because otherwise our immune systems will weaken.
