YT Addict | Pre-op (spay) advice We will be going in for Lolli's spay soon and would like to know besides a general "check-up", what should I request to have done for Lolli? Some people when speaking on spay/neuter surgery say you should have a blood panel done, is that necessary or just if some symptoms of something are present? Is there anything else I should consider? Thank you! Hopefully we can get all of this done, we just had to shell out a lot of finances for a funeral and on top of that in FL they just passed some new law that if your dog is not spay or neutered and not licensed it will cost more to get them licensed if not fixed (they will be able to catch people who do not register their dog/cat/ferret through the rabies vaccinations as they are also required by law and you will be required to purchase a license WITH the vaccinations or the vet is required by law to report that you did not purchase a license), active in 2010, so we have to be sure to do this before the new year. Really bad timing too, since Christmas and all. So hopefully we can do this in a reasonable amount of budget. I was researching some of the links in the sticky for vet bill assistance but I don't think I really qualify for any of it.

| There is a sticky on anesthesia protocol which will explain what the vet should be doing. Blood work is optional, but I would not even consider doing an elective surgery without it.

| I would definitely recommend pre-op blood work. It's a good way to assure that your baby's liver will be able to handle and metabolize the anesthesia BEFORE they do the surgery. Rio was just spayed 2 days ago and I had the optional pre-op blood work done. My vet has a lab in-house so they did the tests the morning before her surgery. Blood tests were good, and her spay was routine (with a few baby teeth pulled too). Good luck! |

I had the option of purchasing an e-collar at the vet when I picked her up, but I bought two collars weeks before. One was an inflatable collar (like a donut) from PetSmart which is nice because it allows peripheral vision. Good for day time because she can play with her toys and still be able to see around her. I also bought a Softee Cone Collar from one our YT friends Mom To Hot Rod. It's a soft collar thath is fabric so it's much more comfortable. Rio wears that one when she's sleeping because it allows her to curl her neck comfortably but still prevents her from licking her incision. Attached is Rio wearing both: | |
