| false or not? what are the signs of pregancy? She just finished her first heat cycle a couple of weeks ago. I have kept too close an eye on her so she doesn't become pregnant. diapers and all. I will take her to vet monday to make sure. her breast are swallen and seem like they are filling up with milk. and she acts depressed.

| I have read that a clue is that around 18-21 days postfertilization, many pregnant females will appear nauseous and even vomit. They do have a canine (Reprochek) test that can detect the presence of relaxin, a substance produced by the placenta of a pregnant dog. 21-25 postfertilization days is typical with the test. By about 35 days an ultrasound can be done. There might be a mucus discharge from the vagina and enlarged, pinkish nipples. Some females actually go through a false pregnancy too. All the signs are there but yet the female is not pregnant at all. ??

| thanks schatzie, i am not sure if a false pregnancy is good or not. but if i ever let her have pups i don't want it to be now. i am really worried and scared. i called a vet today (our vet is not in on the weekends) i am not sure who i talked to but the man told me if we didn't want puppies that we should have her spayed now. i said if she is really pregnant and not false pregnancy that would kill the pups and he said they do that all the time. I didn't like that statement! I would never do that. she is 10 months old and i think too young. she just went through her first heat cycle and i have taken very good measures to prevent this from happening which is why i think it is a false one. how will this affect her? this person i talked to said if it is a false one than she could develop an infection in her uterus and cause problems. i will of course ask our vet about it all come monday morning but until then i am gonna be losing sleep.

| Idenise, I found this on a search tonight regarding false pregnancies. False Pregnancies Q: Hi, I have had two female yorkies with false pregnancies with complete with milk. What is the treatment for this? How serious is this? One is 6 years old and the other is 9 years old. Would spaying in these girls need to be done on a emergency basis? Are some breeds more susceptible to false pregnancies? (Both girls were going to be spayed next month but did not know if it needed to be done right away with a emergency charge/visit). Thanks, B A: False pregnancy is probably a normal outcome for an estrus period in which mating does not occur, in dogs. Unlike most species, dogs produce progesterone at levels sufficient to maintain pregnancy whether they get bred or not. Therefore, it is likely that many dogs experience at least some degree of "false pregnancy" after an estrus period. It is not an emergency situation. There are medications to suppress the symptoms of false pregnancy but there tends to be a rebounding of signs once the medications are discontinued, so I favor not treating this condition if possible. Most bitches will stop having signs about 80 days after the estrus. They often will produce milk and there can be signs such as nesting behavior or mothering of inanimate objects. If milk production causes discomfort an analgesic such as aspirin may be helpful. Do watch for signs of pyometra (uterine infection), including drainage from the vulva, increased drinking and urinating, inappetance or lethargy. If these signs occur it would be a good idea to see your vet. Pyometra is more common after estrus than at other times. I don't think that false pregnancy makes a bitch more likely to have pyometra, it is just something to watch out for in any intact female dog. I am not aware of a breed predilection towards false pregnancy but can't say there isn't one, either.

| just updating on Ahia. I took her to see the vet today and he thinks she is going to have kittens. he wants to see her again in 2 weeks to check her again. if she got a pup in there i sure don't know when it happened. i was so overly protective in that area. i feel so bad.

| kittens or puppies It is too early for even a vet to tell. I bet she is not in whelp. Fetuses can not be palitated until around 4 weeks. You were very careful and kept the male away, diapers etc..it is normal for a female to have swollen mams post heat cycle..all the symtoms of pregnancy..that means her hormones are working correctly. You will know soon enough. Best wishes |

| sorry, yes she is a yorkie. i guess i should have explained. my husband says she must be part cat because she lays on the back of the couch and acts like a cat. so i have been saying she might have kittens in there. since the vet said he thinks she is pregnant i have been kind of excited and scared. i know nothing about this area and have been searching for any info to put me more at ease. it feels kind of like having a teen age daughter that you didn't want to end up pregnant but once it happens you are excited for a new grandbaby. (not that this has happened to me). we had, at first, wanted to breed the two and then i started reading all the things that could go wrong and seeing all the pics of ones that need adopting turned me against the idea. so this has been an accident if she is truely going to have a baby. thanks guys.

| I can surely understand your anxiety over all this. Time will tell for sure....And as that time continues and the vet can be positive with his/her diagnosis be sure to let us know if puppies are in Ahia's future. (thanks for explaining the kitten's part, LOL)

| Ultra sounds wont show before 35 days (costly here about $200 with vet visit and procedure) and an xray wont usually show skelton before 42 days ($165.00 xray plus vet visit) My Hatie on first heat had swollen breast, it's their hormonal changes becoming a woman so to speak If you kept panties on her just like a condom you're about 99% save (joking) you should be fine!
