Default RAW and Bacteria worries

Ok I have read that folks dont' recommend raw because of the bacteria to people. Now is that from prep or is it from them going to the bathroom and people can catch something from that?
I am thinking prep would be no different than when you prep your own dinner. Right?
Anyone know?

Hello...I was worried about similar things when I started raw, but to be honest I have no issues or worries what so ever anymore. As long as you take the right precautions, you will be fine. Yes, it is very much like preparing meals for us.

I make sure I do a few things to be safe:
-I use individual small little containers to defrost medallions individually.
-I wash my hands after handling frozen raw or defrosted raw with HOT soapy water.
-I always serve defrosted raw in a stainless steel dish. It is supposed to be most hygienic.
-I defrost a few days a time so I don't have to handle it on an everyday basis.
-As soon as Snick is done eating, I wash everything (dish, container, lid, knife) with HOT water and dish washing soap.
-I wipe Snicks face with a warm baby wipe after he eats.

I'm probably forgetting a few but I'm sure the others will chime in

Hope this helps
-Snick & Viv

From the prep. As we all know, you need to be careful with raw meat but no more or less careful than you need to be with your own meat.
You might want to look at this site if you're researching as there's alot of misinformation out there!

Don't tell me, Viv, you heat the baby wipe in the microwave for Snick? If so, you have to be banned from the board for making us all look bad lol...

Actually salmonella and other diseases can be found in their feces after eating raw. We did a lot of research before we put the boys on raw, and in the limited amount of peer-reviewed research we found, the consensus was that the prevalence of that bacteria is more often in raw (poultry) fed dogs. If there is anyone around who is suffering from an auto-immune disorder or going through chemotherapy, I would not feed raw. However, this is of very little concern to us, and we have fed raw for over a year now with no problems.

I am not very sanitary with it, and strangely enough, the only time either boy has gotten sick has been when they've been off the raw for a few weeks if I run out or get lazy

I guess the feces is my concern. My dogs go outside - my girl goes on the porch cause for PETE'S SAKES...LORD FORBID SHE DO HER BUSINESS IN THE GRASS We have to clean it up off the porch (we use a shovel and just toss it in the yard). I do have children that go outside so I guess I am wondering if I need to be concerned about them playing in the yard if there is mess in the yard.

The same things can be found in the feces of kibble fed dogs as that found in raw fed dogs. You might want to read up on the following link if this is especially concerning to you- it pretty much answers all your questions!

Animal Smiley 019 Hello

I just want to say hello to the Yorkie, community. I have a Yorkie that is 1yr and 10months old. We have had a lot of problems with him scratching all the time. Can anyone please tell me what to do. We have tried oatmeal shampoos and are about to give up.

Thank You

I forgot to mention that. Salmonella can be found in kibble-fed dogs as well as actual kibble. I always wash my hands after feeding kibble, too. I'll try to find the articles we found about the risks of hospital therapy dogs being fed raw. It was on one of my husband's memberships, can't remember which one, I'll have to look!

I would not worry about your raw-fed dog going in the backyard. Your pup sounds like Ryder- heaven forbid he go in the GRASS!!!!! He even potties on the porch, drives dh absolutely nuts. I just tell him, "oh well better than in the house!"

tjdmom is absolutely right. Salmonella and other bacteria (such as e.coli) are present in feces of ALL dogs, raw-fed or kibble fed. Such bacteria is also found in kibble, just like amandawash said. It's all about using common sense, such as washing your hands after handling raw food and then washing the dog dishes after they eat. When my dogs are fed outside I wipe their paws and muzzle with a baby wipe but that's it. Dogs have been eating raw food since the beginning of their existence and people have been feeding dogs raw for decades with no problems. As long as you aren't licking your dog's bowl after he eats it's pretty unlikely that you'll get sick.

All poo is not a good thing for children to play around, be it dog, cat or human. IMHO... If you're children are playing in the backyard, poo should be picked up daily, if not more. Also, for us that have little ones that BELIEVE they are too good to poo in the yard and go on the porch/patio, we pick those little presents up quickly. After any hard/soft surface clean up I use Natures Miracle to make sure the area is clean

Hello Tom37110,

Welcome to Yorkie Talk!! Your baby might have an allergy. Bonnie used to be itchy, and I started feeding raw. That has really helped.
I think you might have better luck if you would re-post a NEW thread.
Also, go to the bottom of the page and search for "itchy" issues or raw feeding. You will find so much great information. Good luck
