| Urine analysis...urgent question Hello everyone. I have a quick question. I have an appointment with the vet this morning to determine if Coco has a UTI. They told me to bring them a sample of his urine, now the problem is Coco is not really obeying his mat rules and I was with him for half an hour this morning trying to make him pee in the pot. Unfortunately he ended up peeing all over the floor. Now what I did was I took a syringe and withdrew the pee from the floor into the pot..Will the urine be contaminated or still sufficient for examination. If anyone has an idea it would be very grateful. The vet's office is not open yet this is why im asking Thanks -Maria |

| Some vets will take it and others will not. It is contaminated, but the same would go for getting a sample from the pee pad. If you don't have time to try and free catch it or if you just don't want to, the vet can take it (athough some sometimes don't feel like it).

| The vet will be able to use that urine but if it shows anything abnormal the vet will need a sterile urine sample called a C&S. He can tell you the best way of obtaining it. Why do you think your baby has a UTI ? Let us know what happens at the vet. Good Luck . |

| Okay thanks I just hope they are able to differentiate bacteria caused by infection as to bacteria found on the floor....lol I'm sure there's some possible way they can.. |

| The reason why I think he has UTI is because he's not urinating as usual. He pees very regularly and the past few days he's been peeing maybe 3x a day...Also he's trained to ONLY pee on the mat, which is where he does his stuff all the time, now he's peeing everywhere in the house but there. His urine doesn't look the same either very dark and strong smell...I'm not quite sure this is why I hope they're able to tell with the urine test. |

| Actually, this is the reason some vets just like to take it, especially if it is going to be sent for culture. If there is too much bacteria in it, then taking some from him is better.

| The first time I collected a sample it was from the floor with a syringe. It was very contaminated.

| They should be able to atleast get an idea. If he has an infection there will be white blood cells. However, they probably will not be able to culture the specific bacteria because of the contamination. I would keep trying to get a clean sample, hopefully you can get one before your appointment. BTW you should keep the urine in the fridge until your appt.

| Thank you all for your help, truly appreciate it. So basically I went to the vet and it was not a UTI. The DR. found no inflammation and no infection. He says that it's mostly psychological and the trip to the salon may have most likely traumatized him. Now I'm trying my best to get him back to peeing on his mat. I guess no more salons for him I need to learn to do it myself and honestly that's what I truly recommend for everyone. The DR mentioned how yorkies tend to be very sensitive so someone may hurt them mentally without even knowing it, he told me to keep an eye on that. On the bright side little Coco is healthy which I'm very happy about. Thank you all -Maria |
