| pancreatitus Hey everybody I'm new to the forum and have just gone thru quite an ordeal with my 9 year old female yorkie. Out of the blue, she developed pancreatitus. She had been sick with vomiting and diarrhea for about a week. On our first visit to the vet, she was given carafate and a shot of pepcid. We honestly thought that would do it but when she didn't get any better, I took her to an animal hospital on the weekend. The blood studies confirmed the diagnosis! After leaving her there for 4 days on heavy doses of iv fluids, she is home and doing better. Apparently one of the causes is feeding them too many table scraps. We have always been so careful- she certainly doesn't eat a porterhouse steak, but she will be on a strict doggie food low cal diet now. I just wondered if anyone else went through this. The guilt is overwhelming |

| Oh, your poor baby...don't beat yourself up about it...who knew back in the day? When I was growing up we felt good about giving our dogs the leftovers! I am the same way about no table scraps or people food now because I have heard the stories but my H will still sneak them stuff when I am not looking so I worry. My breeder says her yorkies neve rhave red meat of any kind cross their lips! I am not that strict but pretty close. |

| Welcome blades and sorry you had to go through that.. Glad that your baby is recovering. I read so much on here but I am a little confused. When you say table scraps do you mean all human food. I mix cottage cheese etc., healthy stuff in Gucci's dry food for she will not eat it. The feedback on here seems to be the same we all seem to mix some sort of food. Is this not good for them at all? | I have not dealt with this but have heard of it before. My dogs get very little table scraps. My husband will give them a little piece when he is eating sometimes.

Do be careful, your dog is older and once they have pancreatitis they are prone to get it again. My dog had chronic pancreatitis from the age of 3, kept under control until he was 8 years old, it was a real problem for the last two years of his life, severely limiting what he could eat. He did very well for a long time on this food: http://www.thehonestkitchen.com/verve.htm He had to have things well cooked so it didn't irritate his system, so I would mix the above food with one egg, and add a jar of Strained chicken and Vegetables (Gerber), and bake it up like a brownie. He loved this diet, and much healthier and tastier than the dry prescription diets that he had before. Good luck with your little one, pancreatitis is scary and painful! | |

| blades and pancreatitis Thanks for the warm welcome and kind words. Blades seems to be doing well- she's gobbling a tablespoon of ivf sensitive formaula 3 times a day along with her meds. She even has her happy face back on. Someone said my message was too long but we were not giving her junk food. She loves apricots and I'm sure that didn't bring it on. Someone said the treats could be high in fat. I never thought of that. They are now in the garbage! Thanks again and I'll stay in touch. |

| Pancreatitis Hi Blades, My 3 yr old Yorkie was diagnosed with pancreatitis about a year ago. Please don't feel guilty as mine has NEVER had table scraps and still got it!! He is currently going thru his second bout of it, but seems to be doing better. The first just about killed him, it came on so suddenly, over night!! He spent a week in the hospital, but thank gawd came thru it alright. As for now, the hospital gave him shots of antibiotics, pepcid, and fluids. He is on a boiled rice and chicken diet, and the intestinal bleeding has stopped. I'll be taking him to the vet tomorrow for a checkup, so hopefully all is going well. Please remember that once they get pancreatitis, they will likely have episodes of it yearly, so be very careful. Good luck and I hope your baby is all better!! |

| Thanks for good news ;o) I only feed my Yorkies (Bayli youngest of the 3) Eukanuba Lamb and Rice. The other 2 are fine, but Bayli has always been a very sick puppy from the start. For the first month of his life, I had to syringe food down his throat, then he had ring worm late they couldn't get rid of for 8 months (we all caught that!!), they ended up, after months of 2x week lyme dips, giving him this very strong internal medicine to take and that finally got rid of it. He's been quite a challenge, but I love him all the more ;o) |

I'm really sad but I did get to see her. They said she could be there on an IV for a week. I know my husband feeds her table scraps sometimes,But NEVER again. She's never even spent a night alone. |

| Pancreatitis Hi Blades~ I can certainly sympathize with you. Bentley got pancreatitis out of the blue and we nearly lost him. We "NEVER" gave him human food. He only got milk bone treats and Science Hill dog food. Every since we now feed him a prescription diet and dog treats we get from out vet. I almost panic when he acts like he doesn't feel good because I am so paranoid it will happen again. Bentley and I wish you the best.
