| Layla had blood work done today All came back well except her Lipase (Layla has pancreatitis- when she went for her blood work in Feb they were 800) which was 5330- (under 900 is normal- last october it was only 3000 which would lead me to believe thigns have gotten worse- although she still shows NO signs) What PISSES me off is the vet tech says- well our testing on this usually runs higher than most labs (as in it is NOT accurate). now this totally pisses me off because a) how is that reliable? and b) i have a dog with a pancreas history- why do I HAVE TO PAY extra to have it sent to the outside lab to get a more accurate result? AND they wanted to wait 6 months to retest to the outside lab- grrrr. So we are having it sent to the outside lab to get the "real" result and she will get back to me tomorrow. I am so upset- I really thought all oft his lipase stuff was behind us- i PRAY things come back ok tomorrow. |

| Marcerella, I can understand your frustration -- I have you and Layla in my thoughts and prayers. I sincerely hope that the "real" test results come back quickly and show that Layla is well. and coming your way |

| That is pretty high. I wouldn't expect it to be normal when sent to a lab. BTW, the same goes for platelets at some or all hospitals. It is more accurate to do the CBC with an outside lab. It would have been nice had they told you that thte results could be skewed before you put the money into it though. IMO, maybe just have the whole thing sent out next time. Since she has a history of pancreatitis, I guess another Spec cPL would have to be done if the lipase comes back high again and maybe a diet change? But then she gets almost no fat, right? So it could be that diet change won't work for her (?) or maybe the lipase is up because of something else. Hmmm. Ellie's has been slightly elevated the last two times, but her cPL is normal. We just ignore it. I know a few vets just throw the lipase number out. Not saying it's a good idea, but it can be one of those tricky things to interpret.

I don't know how to lower the fat in her diet- it is VERY low- and again- NO SYMPTOMS- she never pukes- eats very very well- playing like a nut- i just don't get it. She is on a lipase supplement and I will ask her nutritionist if she thinks we should up that.

| WELL the vets office redeemed themselves- she called me back- maybe she could tell I have been a crying mess she felt bad the way she left things on the phone- like she was saying- yes we are unreliable. So she called the manufacturer of the testing device (or whatever) they use. They sent her a chart on what is normal for their tests. Layla's lipase run high- they just do- so this 5000 isn't alarming anyone there because a) she runs high for her (even when done in the outside lab) b) their numbers tend to come out higher. ANYWAYS- as per Crystal's suggestion- we are going to just skip the outside lipase and go right for the Spec cPL at this same lab which is a better marker for pancreas. No one there seems terribly worried- i assume they know what they are talking about- they are such WONDERFUL people and honestly love Layla so I know they are doing what is best. I should hear back tomorrow for the Spec cPL- Crystal what is normal for that test do you know? |

| I'm sorry you're so upset. The likelihood is that everything is going to be just fine. Pancreatitis can be so difficult because high fat food is supposedly only a trigger. Something else may be behind it and a lower fat diet doesn't always fix the problem. Just out of curiosity though, what is her meat source? Turkey breast? How much oil does she get a day? I'm guessing it's her pancreas because her Spec cPL has been up before, but at the same time, Ellie was diagnosed by ultrasound (never did a cPL because we didn't need to). Then later her lipase was up and Spec cPL is normal, so maybe it is something else. High lipase can also mean decreased kidney function (possibly from low blood pressure or dehydration) or IBD.

Layla' main meat source is turkey- she occasionally gets bison and i've just started to try and bring fish back in (why the week or so before her tests- who knows- maybe not THE best idea)- some talapia and salmon. Layla get no oils in her diet- she pukes the next day if she gets it. She has no symptoms to indicate kidney issues so I dont think it is that....

| food and supplements can make a difference; what food is she eating. mine had lots of problems ; however when i switched her food and added supplements that made a big difference. you can add digestive enzymes and probiotic to help her digestive system; also you can add milk thistle to heal her liver. i feed mine the honest kitchen which is a human grade food; it's great. good luck

She can't tolerate any oil? Not even cooked into something? That has got to be frustrating.

I have tried in the past just putting salmon oil on her food- VERY small amounts- went horribly- this is the ONLY symptom this girl has of pancreatitis. Every once and a while I decide to give it another try and I might try again once we get this pancreas thing figured out. Her only source of omega right now is the fish she gets. She tolerates fish very very well. no problems at all.

| No suggestions on how to cook it in because I just use it as is. I don't know...maybe baked the meat in a little bit of it? Anyway, coconut oil may be a good choice for her (MCT, medium chain triglycerides good for pancreatitis patients). We use olive or canola.
