Default quality small bite kibble???

I am bringing home my new baby girl Chloe in a few weeks.....and trying to get everything ready. Cooper eats Taste of the Wild, and By Nature and Natures Variety/all grain free, but the kibble seems way to big for her.

The breeder "recommends Royal Canin mini puppy 33". I am not a fan of Royal Canin and would rather switch her to something better....the breeder is giving us a bag to go home with so of course I will transition slowly over a couple of weeks for her tummy. My question is when I was looking at the better quality foods the kibble is HUGE for her. What would be a good quality kibble that has very small bites and ok for puppy's?

FYI-not a fan of RAW even though some love it/do great on it. .

i think taste of the wild and NV are all life stages right? you could always smash them up into smaller pieces so that you can keep all your dogs on the same food. otherwise i think i'd pick wellness or innova puppy

ok, I know this is going to sound like DUH??? but what they hey you guys all have so much experience maybe someone will have a GREAT answer.

I am really really happy with the all life stages of Taste of the wild and LOVE the idea of all on the same food.....so I went to the kitchen and put some in a large baggie and tried smashing it up with a rolling pin, a large can of soup and resorted to beating it with a dang hand held can opener, and it barely smashed up at all....I got a few broken off pieces but most stayed pretty big.

What is the best way to smash it up and make it into smaller kibble?

LOL i dunno, i never had to smash kibble before. hahahaha

do you have a food processor? maybe that would work. otherwise i'd tried smashing it like i do ice. put it in a plastic bag, wrap in kitchen towel then smack the hell out of it with a meat tenderizer hammer thing. hahahaha

Thanks Kalina82!!! for the laugh. Good idea with the food processor. I like the idea of beating it with a hammer....heck even if it does not get small, I will fell like a new woman with no stress left when I am through.

that's why i like that idea too because if you use the food processor with the same kind of energy all your going to be left with is powdered kibble. i always find it fun to smash things with a hammer, when appropriate

hi, I found a great small kibble from Eukanuba, i dont know if you like that one, but my puppy likes it, I don't have any yorkies but I have two very picky mini dachshunds any way the puppy kibble from that brand is really small and would be perfect for a tiny baby yorkie.

We're using NB duck and potato formula with small bites--mine likes it. About the same size as Royal Canin 33. And, no exthoquin stuff

Hi, congratulations on getting a new baby!

If you like the TOTW and NV, I'd try to keep the puppy on those. I was worried about the kibble size when I first brought Tate home. He was such a tiny little thing but he had no problem eating NV Instinct (Rabbit). I had some RC on hand for him because I knew the kibble was little, but he only wanted his NV. When I rotated to TOTW (Pacific Stream), he loved it too and had no problems eating with his little baby mouth.

Anyway, it's worth a try. If it does turn out to be too big for your pup you can always grind it up then.

I think in pictures, and that was a funny one...lol....But seriously, My little Apple was only 2 lbs. when I brought her home, and had a very tiny mouth (still does really)...I had her on Innova, as it's an excellent kibble and very small...When she seemed to be a little sore w/teething, I would put just a tiny bit of water on it and let it soak for a few minutes...Of course this made it much easier for her to chew...Now she's all grown up and has her adult teeth, she's on raw and doesn't have to chew lololo....go figure Well, she does use those little bitty teeth to chew her bully sticks and stuff...All the best w/your new one!!!!

Max ate EVO small bites when he was a puppy. The company said it was a good all life stages food and his vet (also a breeder) said it was good kibble.

I think Solid Gold Wee Bits maybe all life stages as well as Natural Balance Ultra in Small Bites. Not sure if Wellness Small Breed (small size bites) is all life stages but you could ask the company.

That being said...I have researched dog food until my mind is going "crazy" and blue in the face -LOL
There is not a brand out there that I have found that does not have SOME issue going on with it now or had in the past.
TOTW, NB, Solid Gold, Chicken Soup, ... all the ones with fish meal coming out of the diamond plant are being said as having a preservative that may cause cancer.
Other companies such as EVO and Wellness people have complained about small hairs or tiny bones being found in the food. Sorry but in my opinion we are talking about "dogs"...in the wild they eat bones and hair. If you feed raw chicken wings they are eating bones. Right?
Wellness and other companies are being sued for their "Human Grade" food claims. It's dog food! I would not eat it.
I hope you get my point.
Every food has SOMETHING someone does not like.
Feed your dog what he likes and you feel comfortable with.
There are many here who feed Royal C food. I'm ok with that. It is THEIR dog.
Right now I am feeding Wellness Small Breed & NB Ultra Formula Small Bites.
The other Wellness Foods pieces seem to big for my 7 lb boy and he acted like he was not getting enough food.

When I was growing up my German Shepard ate Purina Dog Chow and lived a healthy life until she was almost 14 and had a severe stroke.
I think we worry more about food than our dogs do-LOL
