| Question about proper age/weight before rabies shot??? What is the age/weight you would recommend before getting first rabies shot. Sadie is almost 17 weeks old and 2.5 lbs and is supposed to get her shot and that by itself tonight. they will keep her an hour and make sure she's not reacting to it horribly and then send her home. what should i expect and is this an okay age/weight IYO. Thanks, |

| I had Lillie's rabies shot at 15 weeks. She did fine. I have noticed a pea sized lump where the injection site was, only to learn today, that it was just from the rabies shot. They say it takes weeks to disappear. She was just a little lethargic the day of the shot but she got back her spunky little self in a few hours. |

| i just read the Jean Dobson and the one below it on the vaccines protcol thread. one said 24 weeks and the other said 16 weeks but close to 4 mo. as possible. not sure which ones is more correct, but legally in this city she must be vaccinated for rabies and licensed with the city at 4 months i think i'll just go have it done as scheduled. it's the ONLY thing they are doing. she's done great with all her other vaccines so far, got a lump from injection site twice and the second time was much smaller and shorter time. my aunt's dog got hers at around this age and the only thing that wasn't so good was that they gave rabies with a bunch of other shots. i refused that and since it's only this one and they do monitor for an hour i think i'll just trust the vet and go with it. i'll be on Sadie watch all evening tho. pray for us that we do fine everyone. for those that said 6 months thanks for the advice. i would wait if it weren't for having to have her registered with the city and rabies shots done by 4 mo. | Ideally, wait as long as possible so she has time to grow as long as you think you can keep her protected until it is given. However, state laws say otherwise. You'd have to look up your laws, but it will likely be required by either 4 or 6 months. Michigan is 4 (or 16 weeks). Some vets will put it off and tell you not to worry about it for now. Others insist on following the law exactly.

Owning Pets in Liberty All dogs over the age of four months must be vaccinated against rabies and licensed with the City. Licenses are available at all local veterinarians and at City Hall. Proof of vaccination must be provided. The license tags must be displayed on the dog's collar at all times. All female dogs in heat are required to be confined within a building, in a way that they will not be accessible to other dogs except for planned breeding.Liberty euthanizes hundreds of animals every year due to unplanned and unwanted litter animals so owners need to do their part to prevent unwanted litters. There are limitations to the number of animals that one can own. No owner shall own, keep or harbor more than two(2) dogs over the age of four months or more than four (4) cats over the age of four months. The City Code states that animals should be properly cared for. Animals of any species must be under restraint at all times, and dog owners cannot allow their dogs to become a public nuisance by barking or howling. Animals, which are a physical threat to humans or other animals, or are wild by nature, are prohibited under the code. An animal owner must follow special provisions once an animal has bitten an individual or another animal. It is unlawful to keep, harbor, own or in any way possess any pit bull dog within the limits of the City of Liberty. "Pit bull dog" is defined to mean: ext ext. so i guess wish us luck, we legally had to anyways because she's over 4 months now. she'll be 17 weeks this Sat. we're leaving for the vets now. i may be back on soon because i'll need someone to talk to while i worry and wait for her for an hour Last edited by RachelandSadie; 10-13-2009 at 03:25 PM. | |

| In Canada you have to have a 15 week old puppy (or older) vac. w/rabies or you cannot bring them in from another country. It is customary to get pups their shots here at their last set of puppy vacs, about 16 weeks. I've never heard of anyone having a problem, although Lily did get her shot separate from the others because she was so small. I hope this helps ease your worry

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | puppies can get their rabies vaccine as young as 4 months old. with our yorkies being so small tho a lot of people like to wait till they are at least 6 months or they wait until they get spayed/neutered at do it then. Morgan had her's done at 18.5 weeks old. she got it 2 weeks after her last puppy distemper combo at 16 weeks. no problems with her. a lot of the time after a rabies vaccines you will notice the puppy is lethargic. there may also be a small lump at the inject site (right thigh) for a few days-weeks which will eventually go away.
