| hard breast My 2 year old yorkie had 4 puppies 3 days ago and this morning I noticed 1 of her tits was real hard, any suggestions? I'm taking her and the puppies to the vet in 2 days to get there tails done, or should I go sooner. the puppies seem to be nursing fine and the mother doesn't seem to be in pain or discomfort, I didn't know if she has a blockage or what thanks |

| I'm not an expert, but it seems a warm compress would help... |

| Warm compresses are fine just keep an eye on it to make sure she doesn't develop mastitis. I'd have the vet check it hen you go in for the tails and dews |

| Our Australian Shepherd developed mastitis in two teets. She whelped on a Thursday and by Friday evening she had a very low grade fever. We went ahead and took her in with the pups first thing Saturday morning (they were having their tails docked) and the vet looked at her and confirmed it. She got antibiotics right away and was just fine with nursing. You might want to talk to the vet sooner if you're not planning on getting their tails done for two more days. But others, correct me if I'm wrong..... I thought tails should be docked 48-72 hours after birth.

tails are docked between 3-5 days on unusually small ones, I have waited till six days. I'm sorry I don't know about the nipple but it makes sense to me that it would cause problems. | |

| My new female Billy has one that didn't develop we didn't know till after birth. it wasn't being used and had started to become hard. I suggest to milk it(below the nipple) very slightly just enough to releave the discomfort. milk will stop producing soon

| I don't know what you mean by milking it below the nipple, she doesn't have a nipple it's just a bump of skin, like it never devoloped |

Use a warm compress and gently massage, but my opinion is to have the vet check her.

To the OP... sorry, don't know what to tell you about the odd nipple. Hope your vet can give you answers. Stormie (our Aussie) actually had what looked like a little extra nub (almost like a skin tag) off to the side of a nipple and when the pups were born they kept trying to latch on to that little nub. They learned soon enough though that it wasn't going to give them anything.
