| Pain med for spay and teeth extraction Oh Yeah! I almost forgot. Ok, so Miley is going in for a spay and a tooth extraction tomorrow. Well I asked how much pain medicine will be and the lady said they don't give it to small dogs such as Miley because they son't have dosages that small. I said well, won't she be in some pain after surgery and all those teeth being pulled....She said the doc gives a morphine shot. I'm assuming this is sometime after the surgery. Won't that shot wear off??? Won't she be in some pain! Poor baby has a lot of teeth to be pulled! Can't I just half or quarter a pain pill if it's not the right dosage for a teeny?? Miley is about 3lbs. HELP

| There are two schools of thought on this. The first believes that surgery isn't as painful to dogs as it is to humans. Besides, if we give meds, how are they going to know that they need to take it easy. They will feel too well and overdo it. They'll be fine without it. The second is, this is a major abdominal surgery (comparable to a hysterectomy in women). Although dogs bounce back faster, that doesn't mean they're not in pain. There are also studies that show that less pain equals faster healing. And as a bonus, pain medications can actually make dogs sleepy. I agree with the second group and would never let a vet do abdominal surgery on my dog without pain meds for 3-5 days after unless the pain meds put said dog in extreme danger. I have never heard of a 3 pound dog not being able to take pain meds. The right one(s) will just need to be selected.

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | there is a pain medication that can be used. its called metacam. its liquid and the syringe that comes with it is in lb increments, not cc's so its easy to dose for a 3lb dog. i don't know why your vet wouldn't have this.

| I always give my dogs Metacam for a few days following procedures like that.I know that they are more comfortable afterwards,ie no trembling, hiding in their bed, licking etc. |

| Teddy was just neutered like almost 2 months ago and he is barely 4 pounds. My vet gave him pain medicine but he cut the pills into smaller pieces and I was told to give them for the next 4 days. Teddy also had some of his baby teeth pulled as well.

Exactly. My Vet has switch to Metacam for small animals just for that reason, it can be dosed much more precise for the little ones. I have a bunch from both being fixed but only gave it to our Sophie for about a day and a half. It was obvious when she was having discomfort. Charlie was fine. Maybe can eBay it. (j/k) | |

| Metacam is the med of choice for small breeds. However, more importantely, your vet should prescribe an antibiotic. Just to guard against any infection that may set in because of the teeth extractions.....

| Something I'll add, if your Vet doens't use or know about Metacam, I'd question their proficiancy doing a spay on a small breed. Most even use different instruments as it's not the same as a large breed. Thee are more/different risks such as they can bleed out quicker and it's not as easy to see if they are so they need to be much more aware of what to watch for and be prepared to act quicker. That's my layman translation of one of the critical things I learned. |

| When I had Motley fixed the vet asked me ahead of time if I wanted pain meds, I looked at him like he was nuts and said well duh...yeah. If I had surgery and no one would give me pain medicine I would NOT be a happy camper. He told me that believe it or not a lot of people do not want them due to the extra cost I can not imagine my baby being in pain all because I refused to fork over a few dollars. |

| I prefer tramadol over any nsaid as nsaids have alot of side effects unlike narcotics - my dd is still jacked up from one dose of metacam now granted the vet gave it to her on empty stomach and she is on steroids so that is a huge no no but i am not a fan of nsaids after this as her intestines have been messed up ever since - narcotics like tramadol are much safer pain med but they do not have an anti-inflammatory agent in them as they are strictly for pain |

| I give Bupranex to all of my pups who have spays, neuters and also difficult dentals. No one can convince me they do not have pain. I personally think it is barbaric not to give meds.....I have had surgery and no one gave me an anti-inflammatory. If they did suggest that, I would bop them over the head! I have not killed a pup yet and I have had many go through sugery.
