| Hair Loss :( Hi there! My name is Carlee and im new to this site. The last post's that I saw relevant to what im going through were in 2005 so I thought id see if anyone has experienced this problem more recently: My Borkie (Bichon & Yorkie... altho she looks way more Yorkie) has been losing her hair quite dramatically around her back legs. It literally looks like someone took the buzzer to her. It started off in little patches but has grown as of recently. She has been to two vets so far and ill be seeing the 3rd this Friday but no one seems to have any answers and the first two vets seemed very casual about the hair loss. I dont have any pics to share as of yet but I promise you it looks terrible and she is even starting to get little red bumps due to the irritation of itching and licking. If anyone has any advice or helpful hints id really appreciate it. Thanks |

| No... No changes there, we used to give her little food scraps every now and then but have stoped since being told that it can have a direct affect on their skin etc. (pretty common knowledge but when they look up at you with those eyes its hard to resist) |

| Oh my goodness your little girl is just precious... Yes they did a skin scrape and the vet did not find anything. He gave her an injection for mites however the itching seems to have gotten worse since then (approx 2 weeks) and he also gave us a little bottle of pills for itching (which doesnt seem to be helping either)... |

| It is a long shot but it could be an ear infection. Yeast in the ears can cause itching and scratching in other areas. Once the scratching progresses, the hair follicle is disturbed thus resting in hair loss. It might be worth having the ears checked. I wish you well in this matter – I know how stressful it is on you when your pooch is in distress. |

did he just do the scrape in one spot or did he do it in multiple spots? Did he check for fleas (i only ask because of the red bumps)? Has she always had this problem or did it just recently start? What kind of food is she eating? Did you start washing her with a new shampoo or start using a new cleaning product/laundry detergent/perfume? anything else start around the same time as the hair loss (it could be something minute that you wouldn't normally think of as a problem)? i'd ask the vet your going to see on friday to do a blood panel and a thyroid check. thyroid problems can cause hair loss.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Did he just scrape and look under scope? Or, did he actually grow it out in culture for 10-14 days? Bc if it's yeast or ringworm, it's needs to grow in culture. I agree, check thyroid. But, are you saying she is losing the hair only bc she is licking/biting her legs or is it also just falling out naturally? If there are any symptoms of Cushings, you'd want to look into that as it causes hair loss....but you're not really describing other issues. It's really hard sometimes to get a diagnosis, I've been there.

She brought up ringworm. did your vet turn out the lights and shine a black light over the hair loss to test for ringworm? while its not a 100% accurate it does show some ringworm. I see your feeding puppy food so i'm assuming she's rather young. hair loss on a young puppy can sometimes be demodex mange but that should have been caught on the skin scrape. As far as the food, i personally do not like eukanuba/iams corporation so i do not recommend feeding any food made by them. i don't know which one your feeding but the eukanuba small breed puppy has by products and corn meal 2 of the first 3 ingredients which are not things you want to be feeding your dog. by-products are basically anything left over (feet, beaks, toes, tails, feathers...among other gross things). I'd switch to a higher quality puppy food. many here feed innova, merricks, wellness, or solid gold, just to name a few.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Oh and btw, RucasMom, my Vet Derm told me that yorkies are much more prone to ringworm (this is a fungus, not a worm) than other breeds, just some genetic vulnerability there. You will not always see a "ring" in dogs, sometimes just a patch. The legs would kinda be an odd place for it to start, but you never know --- and the little red bumps sound like a bacterial infection to me like staph intermedius - but I guess the vet ruled that out by the smear? Usually in s.intermedius - he'd see a whole load of bacteria under scope.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Ack, keep thinking of things I shoulda said.... IF in the end, this is all chalked up to seasonal allergies (pollens) (check out pollen.com for your area) - then you have options of about 4-5 over the counter antihistamines, prescription antihists, Atopica, steroids, or allergy testing followed by custom injections. If your baby does have allergies, you really should get her on a grain free high-quality dog food asap - like Kellie mentioned - Orijen, Innova EVO Small Red Bites, Solid Gold Barking at The Moon. I'm not the biggest fan of Natural Balance allergy formulas bc they contain flax - and I just don't think flax has any business in an allergy food (or, pretty much any dog food, for that matter). Wellness Simple Solutions for allergies do not contain flax .
