| Help!!!! Worms!!!! Ok, I know this is gross subject, but I have a question about worms. The people that we got our little guy from did not take very good care of him. He had fleas from the time he was born until we got him at 8 weeks. He was also not wormed at all. When we took him to the vet the vet gave him some worming meds. The first day I notice one long worm that came out, and several dried up worms in his bedding, but not much after that and they were all dead. That was almost 2 weeks ago. Today I noticed some live worms in his poop. Is this still part of the deworming process?? I called the vet and he told me that when I come back for his shots that he will give him another dose of the worming meds, but that is a month between doses. Shouldn't I be giving him another dose at the 2 week point? I thought you were suppose to worm them every two week for a while. What should I do?? Is there something over the counter I can use?? |

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | I use panacur is an over the counter deworming and If I remember correctly you have to give it to the pup for 3 straight days, that is what I did when Taffy had her puppies, most pups develop worms one time or another, I took very good care of my litter and still got worms.. go to your local pet store and look for panacur.. |

| You should be able to buy worm meds at your vets office,if not available to buy there go to a farm supply store most of them have dog/puppy supplies or try walmart but get that baby treated right away good luck

| I went through this and I feel for you!!! There are different types of worms, worms that are caused by fleas are tape worms and are totally different then the worms that are passed by the mommy. Tape worms are caused by fleas and you have to use a TOTALLY different type of dewormer to get rid of them. I left the VET we had used for over 3 years over this issue. He said the same thing that he was de-wormed by the breeder (which he was) and he had de-wormed him on his first vist and could not de-worm him again until his next visit......he never asked for a poop sample and after I kept seeing worms I was livid....not only is it gross and upsetting to see, but to think your baby must be miserable inside and the vet do nothing.....anyway after much research found out there was a difference and it took different medicine to treat we switched vets, she gave him a pill specfic for tape worms, and of course topical flea medicine and never had worms again.

| I would call the VET back and tell them you had an AH-Ha moment and belive that the worms are not the normal baby worms past from the mom but actual tape worms caused by fleas as you have found out the breeder had a flea problem, and tell them you want to bring in a poop sample if needed so he can be treated for tape worms as he has NOT yet been treated for that specific worm. If he tells you no, that he will see you with his next vaccine visit, then this is your baby and you are is only Advocate so I would find a new vet ASAP and when you call to make an appt ask if they will review a poop sample with a new puppy, if not that is not the vet for you keep calling until you find one that does. My vets office actually told me when I had called back to "stop freaking out, it is just worms" and will be resolved eventually. When I demanded the poop sample be reviewed and found out I was right it was tape worms which he had NEVER been treated for, I flat out told them I was obviously not "freaking out" but cared enough to keep pushing for his sake to get to the right answers....there response was that from my descprition of the worm it did not sound like a tape worm to them, I told them that is why the professionals (the vet) should be the one looking at the poop to make the correct diagnosis and not me.....I left that day and never looked back!

| Signs of Tape Worms are pieces of what looks like dried pieces of rice, stuck in the hair around their bottom and in their bedding. This is most noticible first thing in the morning when they wake up. A stool sample will not necessarily test positive for tape worm. Many times you go by what is seen in the hair and bedding. So...........a stool sample test at your vet's may not be correct. Look for the signs and be sure and tell the vet what, if anything, you see. Quite likely you will also see the worms in their poop. Regular worming medication will not treat tape worm, that is a separate medication. If my vet were to scoff at a worm problem, I would be out the door and looking for a new vet immediately. If a vet will scoff at worms, what else will they deem "unimportant". Google tape worm, there is good info and pictures on the net. You should get this treated and not wait until the next vaccine visit, unless that is coming up in a week or so.

Remy just got a huge infestation of them Sunday night (at friend's house and she did not tell me they had fleas....grrr...). He had over 50 on him! He's been bathed, I've flea combed him about 15 times. He is on Sentinel so that is helping, and although he had a topical (Natures Remedy) treatment, he still got just attacked. Anyhow, want to be proactive on the tapeworm situation. I have Panacur, and on the packaging it says it addresses tape worms. Is this the drug you used, or was there a different one? | |

| They gave us a pill called Droncit. It has been over 1 1/2 yrs since this happened but I am almost sure it was like a 1 time does, or maybe 2....it was in a pill bottle but seriously like only 1 or 2 pills they gave us and not expensive at all....and that was the magic trick for us, we went from seeing live worms...(EEWWWW sorry for the gross factor)....to seeing them dead in the poop the very next day. But trust me I became obessed with looking at his poop just to make sure they were gone!

| The tape worm pill is a 1 time dose. That is outrageous that a vet would be so cavalier about it. Tape worms are parasites that steal the nutrients from the host. As long as your baby has them, your baby is not getting all the nutrients from its diet that your giving it. It could literally starve to death while it is eating well.

| Well, I just called the vet and he is getting me some meds to give our poor little guy! I feel so bad for him!! Anyway, I reminded the vet that he had fleas when we first got him and that I'm now seeing the tape worms in his poop and bedding. He did not even ask to look at the poop, he just said come and pick up his meds. I feel a little better now that I know this is going to be taken care of soon. Thanks everyone for your responses. |

| Quote: One more question... Reesie has been doing great with going out side to poop. Well, today I caught him trying to poop inside, twice. The first time he was right in the middle of playing and then all of sudden he was squatting on the floor, no sniffing or anything. I got him outside before it hit the floor. It was like he just lost control. Do you think the worms are doing that?? | |
